Kevin 1
who exactly is fit to wear it in our current establishment? Lovenkrands would be the main contender for me, not andy cause of his age.
@yourservice 67
Retired with Shearer tbh.
Ketsbaia 0
It's just a fucking number. We gave it to Martins so we might as well give it to anyone.
@yourservice 67
Canny resemblance to Lovenkrands I am not a number, I am a free signing. Edited February 6, 2010 by @yourservice

MattM4 0
I'm really glad it was given to someone else straight away after Shearer retired. It is somewhat special but at the same time a much too big a deal is made of it. Having it retired would be preposterous.

I know it has somewhat of a status at the club, but surely the player makes that status? Not every no9 has been a cult hero. Id just give it to someone. It shouldnt be a burden. Craig 6700
Before 1993, we used 1-11 and someone on the field wore #9 - hell I think I even remember seeing Benny Kristensen wearing it once! Squad numbers should be done away with and return us to the traditional numbers. Sure there was always a stigma about our #9 shirt (purely because of Milburn IMO) but it was also accepted that someone would be wearing it in every game. IrishMag 0
The way the number has been treated this season especially, whoever is next to get it is going to be under a hell of a lot of pressure to perform. What if someone were to come in, be given the 9 shirt and Carroll were to go and outscore him. Unfair pressure IMO.
snakehips 0
There's something not quite right about C.H's stuff about fighting to win the right to wear it, or whatever he said. According to Best, he was offered the No. 9 (amongst others), making Hughton's comments bollocks. Something doesn't add up.
loonyTOON 10
No-one at the club is 'worthy' of the no. 9 shirt. Carrol no way! Also if the decision is going to be made, us as the fans should have a say through voting

LeazesMag 0
The fuss that is made of the Newcastle number 9 shirt is ridiculous Agreed. Whats even worse is the perception given to other supporters that having a number 9 to idolise is more important than actually having a good football team. Some southerners actually think this of us ie stupid geordies and all of that. Some may be, but not all. Small time thinking. Just like the perception that "success" is promotion glory for arguably the 2nd biggest club in the country. Total bollocks, all of it.

JawD 99
none of the current squad are anywhere near good enough to wear it.... We cant expect every player to wear the no9 to become a cult hero. They are by their nature once every generation or so. (some more I know). I bet anyone here can name more crap no 9's we've had than good.
Christmas Tree 4911
Theres a nice table here on Newcastle Online and it lists Number 9's down the years. Having Man Flu I aint sure if this is all the number 9's but if so, it surprised me when you look at it how few there have been in my time. My time starts with Peter Withe and goes on like this; App Goals Peter Withe 1978-1980 83 27 Imre Varadi 1981-1983 90 42 Chris Waddle 1980-1985 191 52 Paul Goddard 1986-88 70 23 Mirandinha 1987-1990 63 23 Mick Quinn 1989-1992 133 63 David Kelly 1991-1993 79 38 Andy Cole 1993-1995 84 68 Les Ferdinand 1995-1997 83 50 Alan Shearer 1996-present 395 201 My favourite without doubt was Andy Cole. The team, the time, the rollercoaster. His reign had everything and I'll will always remember him for his goals against leicester (7-0) and the hat-trick against Liverpool. The next wearer should probably be an another "ignorant" foreigner like Martins who doesn't know the history to lessen the pressure. Apart from that as long is its not Ameobi I don't really care. That conveniently misses out the shit like Rafferty, McDonald and Pingel. Personally I think Paul Goddard was very underrated though Cole remains my favourite. tinofbeans 91
all the same. pretty amazing stuff. thought ferdinand was absolutely unplayable in most of his matches for us. great player, shame as his partnership with shearer was genuinely world class.
