Clare Short at the Iraq war inquiry - live

Follow the action as the former international development secretary gives evidence to the Chilcot panel

11.12am: Prashar asks about evidence from the MoD saying DfID officials did not want to get involved in the reconstruction effort because they disapproved of the war.

Short says she does not accept that. DfID officials were very professional.

11.10am: Short says after the war there was a rumour in government that Goldsmith was thinking of resigning because he thought the occupation was illegal.

She sought legal advice. She was worried about her officials doing something illegal.

She was advised that preparing humanitarian relief was always legal.

But she had been "thrown into a tizz" by the thought that she might be instructing them to do illegal things.

11.09am: They're back. Short says the Ministry of Defence did not prepare for its obligations as an occupying power under the Geneva Conventions to maintain law and order.

10.55am: Here are the main points:

• She accused Blair of lying to her when he told her in 2002 that he had not had a presentation on military preparations for war. (See 10.08am and 10.18am)

• She criticised Blair for ignoring the cabinet and sidelining dissident voices in government. (See 10.05am, 10.11am, 10.12am, 10.13am and 10.21am

• She accused Lord Golsmith of "misleading" the cabinet on March 17. She said that he was wrong to say that the legal case for war was unequivocal. (See 10.28am)

• She repeated her claim that Goldsmith had been "leant on" by Downing Street in an attempt to get him to declare that the war was legal. (See 10.28am)

• She said she was "jeered at" when she attempted to initiate a discussion on the legality of the war on March 17. (See 10.28am)

• She said the Iraq war had made it impossible to gather international support of humanitarian intervention in the future. (10.46am)

She resigned 7 years ago in protest over Iraq.

Shouldn't she have been consistently saying these things since then?

I know she has been critical, but this seems to be a lot of new strong stuff.

She just said Blair talked her out of it by saying that Bush had agreed to a roadmap for Palestine etc...

"The working of British Govt was marginalised to our eternal shame"...CS

Riveting stuff.

I quite like her, like I do any politician who's not afraid to speak their mind these days, but she's always been prone to saying whatever will make her popular at any given place and time. No different to Blair and his cronies in that respect, I suppose, albeit at the other end of the spectrum. I wouldn't confer a great deal of credibility on her, though.

Nice to see someone giving evidence who isn't afraid to tell the truth but the inquiry will ultimately be a complete waste of time imo.

There is still the EU avenue. Soldiers families and all that. You never know.

Another fuckin ex CND Soviet Russia supporter.

Stupid fat cow.

Thank God you don't have long left.

got plenty left thanks.

CND supporters, ex Soviet Russia supporters = foolish braindead cunts. They lost. Their system lost. Those in the UK who blindly supported them should have fucked off to Russia during the 1950's they were the current day muslim and terrorist appeasers.

While this is all good fun to hear, I have no time for ex ministers who whinge about being marinalised. They knew Blair, like Thatcher, wasn't a great believer in cabinets having input.

Yet they all like to keep the noses in the trough at the time. No hood bleating now. CS resignation was more to do with being personally fucked around rather than any great principals over the war.

Ugly bitch as well who always strikes me as fucking thick or at the very least special needs. Amazing what people vote for.

Was it the same when she resigned over the Labour party stance on the first Gulf War too?
