Guest alex
If we played Routledge-Barton-Guthrie-Jonas in midfield we might actually be able to utilise a player like Vela.

Guest Stevie
Anyway, lets give Best a chance, I was thinking about him tonight texting his mates "YE BLUD BUZZIN HOME BOY, GET U TICKETS FOR DA GAME", and he'll be aware the expectancy level is higher here. We've got him now, he's our player and lets get behind him so he can turn out for us with a lot of confidence. When a player, especially at Newcastle I would say, has the belief that the crowd like him he can raise his game 50% you saw it with Sibierski, and there's a lot of players the crowd just don't like and they never manage to raise it. So lets get behind him, and lets hope what happened to Harewood when he got booed off never happens to him, because he's 23, and most people are still kids mentally at 23, regardless what front they put on, he'll be sensitive to abuse, so lets get behind him and see if he can flourish. Why we should be saying all the Best to NUFC new boy - and how Ronald McDonald got smashed after Andy Cole's debutBy Lee Ryder on Feb 2, 10 09:44 AM As a Geordie native who is prepared to take anybody that I meet exactly as I find them and allow myself the opportunity to judge people for myself before forming an opinion, I have to say I'm quite intrigued by the signing of Leon Best. You may mock and Best is a far cry from some of the strikers that have arrived at St James' Park in years gone by. Already, his attitude seems a 100 times better than that of Marlon Harewood who in my humble opinion showed up on Tyneside as if the world owed him a favour and he was here to save us all. And while he did score four goals (three more than Frank Pingel and 202 less than Alan Shearer), watching the striker at Nottingham Forest leave the field of play as if he'd been withdrawn after having the game of his life, even though his shirt must have been bone dry, made me fear the worst. Best arrives with 42 goals under his belt at 23-years-old after 120 starts and numerous appearances from the bench for Southampton, QPR, Yeovil, Sheff Wed, Bournemouth and Coventry. That may not be a startling CV to many people out there and nobody is saying he is a major signing. But to write him off now - which many were on the various radio stations in the city last night - or on message boards, is slightly early, after all he has yet to kick a ball!!! Surely judgements should come later? As most strikers and fans will tell you an early goals will help you in a major way. Andy Cole managed it on his home debut against Notts County and it had an impact. In fact in my memory of it certainly had an impact. If you can remember after scoring in the 4-0 win over the other Magpies, David Kelly celebrated by jumping on his back. After the game in McDonalds in Northumberland Street, a Toon fan tried to re-create the moment by jumping on the back of one of those huge Ronald McDonald statues and it just couldn't take the weight before keeling over. But anyway back to those early goals, Les Ferdinand also achieved that feat against Coventry in a 3-0 win back in 1995 on his debut. While Alan Shearer netted the first of 206 with a majestic curling free-kick on his home debut against Wimbledon. While Micky Quinn just took the biscuit by smashing in four times against Leeds United in 1989 in a 5-2 win. Quinn's home debut was much less heralded than those of Shearer, Ferdinand or Cole but perhaps Best can take a lot from that. Don't forget, Quinn arrived with banners saying "Mick ******* who?" during mass protests about the running of the club in the late 1980s. Which is why Best could leave a few people eating humble pie First Anal using my stats, on more than one occasion, and now this baald cunt copying of my posts??!?! Someone else mentioned the Mick fuckin who thing a few weeks ago as well. Edited February 2, 2010 by Stevie

Dr Gloom 22149
my cov-supporting mate finally got back to me with this: Best is alreet, good Championship player. Certainly improved a lot over the last year or two. Plus a full Irish international, although that is not saying much these days... Could be the new John Aldridge... JaMoUsE 0
COVENTRY City sold Leon Best to Newcastle United for a fee close to £2m, the Telegraph can reveal. The Magpies came in with a late offer for the centre-forward on Sunday night, which was accepted and the player was then given permission to speak to the club. He travelled to the North East yesterday morning where he agreed personal terms and passed a routine medical before putting pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year contract. City fans will no doubt be pleased with the fee for Best which appears a decent return for a player who cost the club just over £1 million from Southampton, and for whom they were confident of getting somewhere in the region of £2 million if they had kept him and taken it to a tribunal in the summer. Staggering.. Edited February 2, 2010 by JaMoUsE

Isegrim 9900
I really hope it were over the top wage demands who stopped us from signing Moses (as Simon Birds says) otherwise it would look even more baffling.
The Fish 10964
thats desperation for you failed on three other striker targets Not too distressed about missing out on Beckford, but Moses could have been a goo shout. The comforting thing for me is that we seem to have had three targets for the same position.

The comforting thing for me is that we seem to have had three targets for the same position. It'd have been comforting if it had been for the position we desperate needed to invest in. As for missing out on Beckford, I think we've ended up with less quality in Best.

But you have to wonder if we weren't looking, or we were looking and there simply was not a player who was a) good enough 2) interested in us iii) available at a reasonable price. Re: Beckford v Best, I don't know enough about Best. Only that he scored a few at the beginning of the season, but has been quiet since. And about Beckford, all I've picked up is he's not an efficient striker and he's unproven at this level. I'll reserve judgement til I see how Best deals under the glare of 40,000 unforgiving eyes

Deano 0
I have to admit i was totally underwhelmed with this signing but if you look at his record of 42 goals in 120 starts that actually isnt a bad return for a striker. 1 in 3. Be interesting to see shola, lovenkrands and carrols goal ratios.

Deano 0
Taken from nufc.com so i dont know how accurate they are... Leon Best...42 in 120 starts...1:3 Shola Ameobi...58 in 158 starts + 105 Sub appearances....Just better than 1:3 Peter Lovenkrands...9 in 19 starts + 12 Sub appearances...1:2 Andy Carroll...9 in 26 starts + 27 Sub appearances...1:3 In the grand scheme of things and average of 1:3 within our strikers isnt bad but it isnt great....just highlights the fact we really dont have an out and out goalscorer....but we knew that already. Best looks as good as what we already got....no better, no worse....just making up the numbers. Just hope he has got a bit of pace about him and can forge a good partnership with someone. Best and Carroll to start on Friday? Edited February 2, 2010 by @sportsdirect.COCK
snakehips 0
To have Lovenkrands stats as only for NUFC means Best's can only be 0:0. If you state Best's for other clubs, we must state the same for Lovenkrands, and Carroll when he was at Preston (I think it was). Anyway, the thing is, are we actually creating chances????? If so, then we obviously aren't converting them. Hughton must think this is the case or he wouldn't have targetted getting a striker, therefore he sees Best as a probable answer to the problem. I couldnt find them mate otherwise i would of... But i agree, the reason our strikers arent scoring goals is because of the lack of production from midfield...iv always said that tbh.
