Alex 36037
In the interests of balance and because it tastes nice, I’m having the odd Estrella Galicia. @PaddockLad not sure if you knew, as I believe you’re a fan, they stock it in LIdl now. Which reminds me, as I believe you’re also a fan of Cuban Ron, they do their own 7 yo Cuban Rum now. I’ve had better but it’s very decent. Especially for the price

wykikitoon 21840 Posted Saturday at 18:15 Share Posted Saturday at 18:15 Whisk(e)y drinkers. I need a recommendation. A mate would like to try a whisky. He's only had bad experience when someone gave him an Ardberg some years ago and he thought all Whiskies were like that. I am normally a proddy man with my Whiskey and go to Bushmills. Any others recommended?

Any others recommended? Did he like the Ardberg? Interestingly it is the extreme NW quadrant which is where I used to like mine. I don't think there is any correct answer to this any more than what the best red wine is. Personal taste and trial and error. I would say though Scottish whisky is far superior to Irish whiskey and @Alex is your man. Fuck, wish I could still drink this. The week I've had though I'd definitely drink a whole bottle right now unfortunately.
Alex 36037 Posted Saturday at 19:19 Share Posted Saturday at 19:19 (edited) @wykikitoon So, I like smokey peated whiskies and I like unpeated ones. But the former is an acquired taste and I didn’t actually like it when I first tried it. My mate brought a bottle of Laphroaig or maybe Ardbeg round what must’ve been 20 years ago and I thought it tasted like seawater. Im terms of single malts I’ve never had a bad one but some are a bit dull imo. And as the popularity of single malts increases world wide, some are not aged all that long. Legally it has to be 3 years but sometimes you’ll get malts all from the same distillery but of varying ages. With those they often don’t carry an age statement (because the age statement has to be the youngest whisky in the bottle, if you put an age statement on). And a single malt looks a bit shit / cheap with (for example) 4 years on it. Not having an age statement doesn’t make it poor quality. But it’s something to be aware of. Btw Bushmills is made exactly like a single malt from Scotland, rather than most other Irish Whiskies. That’s the 10 year old or older Bushmills. Black Bush and ‘standard’ Bushmills are like blended scotch. Black Bush is lovely btw. As to your mate, Wyki: I would probably recommend an entry level whisky like Aberlour 10 or 12, Glenmorangie 10 or 12. Or good old Glenfiddich. If he likes those then maybe experiment a bit more. And if he fancies trying something different, some sites sell miniatures (5 cl samples)*. A Scottish malt that’s very similar in style to Bushmills 10 is the Auchentoshan. For the ones I’ve mention see which ones are on offer online. Or at the supermarket. Most supermarkets have a decent selection of single malts. Read the label / tasting notes though to avoid peaty ones. *Master of malt and the whisky exchange both do this. wykikitoon 21840 Posted Saturday at 20:28 Share Posted Saturday at 20:28 Cheers @Alex that's mint. I love Black Bush. They did a honey one too Bushmills but I took it to Italy when I went biking and it went within two nights it was that nice 😂
Alex 36037 Posted Saturday at 21:13 Share Posted Saturday at 21:13 Amazon quite often has 1 litre bottles of Black Bush on offer. The trouble is, if I buy a litre on offer, I don’t save any money because I just drink more.

Monkeys Fist 44008 Posted Sunday at 12:03 Share Posted Sunday at 12:03 I had a “few” snifters of The Balvenie Doublewood over the Christmas holidays, first time I’ve touched a drop of whisky in a while. And by a few, I mean between my brother and I the bottle got gently caned

The Monkey Shoulder ‘blended malt’ has both Glenfiddich and Balvenie in it. Despite the popularity of Grants and Glenfiddich the company is still owned by the Grant family. It’s significant because something like 90% (might be more tbh) are owned by massive multinational corporations.
Monkeys Fist 44008 Posted Sunday at 12:21 Share Posted Sunday at 12:21 The Doublewood is probably my favourite whisky tbh. We also threw the cork away on a bottle of The English single malt which I’ve had in the cupboard for a good while. Not too shabby at all

Dr Gloom 22865 Posted Monday at 14:37 Share Posted Monday at 14:37 Arran is the nicest dram I've tried recently. I cained a bottle with my dad over xmas - goes down like nectar. My dad is taking my brother and me on a three day tour of distilleries in Islay later this year. A weekend of cultural learning. I'm not a massive fan of the peaty drams usually until the end of the evening, but I'm happy to make an exception
