So outside of the Top 4/Cockney/multi billionaire owner clubs, we're at the top end.

FOOTNOTE: United’s big deal of Monday has gone unnoticed. Not Northern Rock, but the launch of the club’s black and white ice cream range. Those brilliant business brains chose a chilly night game against West Brom to start selling tubs of 'Fabricio Colocreamy'. A tub of ice cream is just what you need when standing watching a football match in sub-zero temperatures!

You've got to be shitting me.... ;)

£2.5m a year seems reasonable like....given that in the Premier League we're not on Match of the Day till last every week and most viewers have switched off by then

You narf talk some shit. See the last three years we were in the Premiership we were featured on live TV more than any club apart from Man Utd and Liverpool. Check it out it's true. Now why do you think that is?

When was the last time Match of the Day showed a live Premier League game like?

Fuck match of the day, people come in and are so pissed they don't remember shirt sponsors, you're talking wank, your point is wank and I definitely think you know it. The reason we're getting a shit sponsorship deal no better than Everton's is because we are wank, sponsors want to be associated with success, not losers. In fact the worst type of side to sponsor is one who get a ridiculous amount of exposure but are associated with negativity. In the Robson days this would've been worth £8m a year. Once again though your point, is total wank.

Have you been taking the irony tablets again? ;)

eh? This is the worst type of lazy post, if you can't contradict a post, don't insuate you can but fail to carry it through? If you haven't got the ability to point out which point is incorrect...pipe down.

Tax payers who support 91 league clubs other than Newcastle United may be feeling slightly queasy today.

Northern Rock, the lender rescued using Government money less than two years ago, a bank owned by you and me, has struck a £10million sponsorship deal with Newcastle United.

That’s £10 million from a state-owned business being pumped into the bank account of Newcastle United, owned by billionaire free-marketeer Mike Ashley.

That’s £10 million that could alternatively be paid back into Government coffers being used to help fund, in part, the extravagant pay and lifestyle of footballers who earn too much money.

Sunderland and Boro fans, plus those from Newcastle’s promotion rivals Nottingham Forest and West Brom may take some persuading that it’s a good idea.

The accusation will be that taxes have been indirectly used to help Newcastle United get promoted.

What’s the next Government intervention, the jokers say? Gordon Brown to succeed Chris Hughton? After all, the club needs an experienced leader who can rebuild despite reduced spending plans. He’ll have to ditch his favourite Raith Rovers mug though.

Or how about Peter Mandleson for United Press Officer? Even Mandleson’s presentation skills and spin would have a challenge getting Newcastle loved again by the nation. Trusty Ed Balls would surely get a place on the backroom staff.

Of course the deal will be mocked, ridiculed and added to the nation’s charge sheet against Newcastle United.

To the traditional crimes: club thought it was too big to go down, over-sentimental fans, bad owner, love their Messiahs; Now add: Robber of the public purse.

But that would be inaccurate and unfair. Newcastle United’s Northern Rock sponsorship deal must be defended, and here is why.

It’s not as if the money is coming directly from Treasury reserves. It is all part of Rock’s business and marketing plan. The payback will be massive national and global exposure on the famous black and white shirt, especially if the Geordies are promoted.

It is business, not charity.

Northern Rock is a business that was brought to its knees by bad management who got greedy, took massive financial gambles and lost. Same as Newcastle United.

Northern Rock plunged into sub-prime mortgages and almost went bust.

Newcastle did the football equivalent by spending their Northern Rock sponsorship money from the 2004 deal in advance... on £17 million Michael Owen. Perfect fit.

Now the two organisations are back on their feet. United are hopefully clawing their way back to the Premier League. Northern Rock is one of the best performing banks in the country and repaying huge slices of loans given by the Government faster than asked.

So as two great North-East institutions bounce back, it is only right that they extend their long-standing sponsorship deal.

It also shows that Northern Rock are staying true to their roots - its HQ is two miles from St James’ Park in Gosforth - and the bank says the deal “represents an important community link.”

As Rock Chief exec Gary Hoffman explained: “We remain mindful of our responsibilities under Government ownership and only consider those advertising and promotion channels that deliver a high return on investment and good strategic fit.

“We believe that the sponsorship deal with Newcastle United provides both of these.”

So well done Northern Rock for sticking with Newcastle United despite the controversy it will generate.

But there is a consolation for rival fans.

It’s that £10 million won’t go into the pockets of some filthy rich banker as a bonus.

And if it all goes wrong at St James’ Park, the headlines won’t change. The old favourites of 'Northern Crock' and 'Northern Wreck' are ready and waiting.

He might have a point if the government loan didn't sit in a different company now. As it stands, he just looks like a clueless tit.

OK I'll make it simple spaz-monkey.... You're saying we've got a shit deal because we're wank and associated with negativity? I don't see how that's different to anything the majority are saying, yet you're still wanting an argument...?

That's because you're a dense cunt and find difficulty grasping what people are saying. Not your fault, just how you are, read South Sheilds' post again, him, no cunt else, stop looking for support by going on about majority, his specific post, no one elses just his point, which my reply was directed towards.
