NEWCASTLE owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias have been busy early on in the transfer window . . . in Las Vegas.

While United manager Chris Hughton started his bid to sign the players to boost the club’s priceless promotion campaign, his bosses flew to the States at the start of the week.

Hughton has been promised money to spend in January, but will have needed to confer with Newcastle’s top brass on whether to up his bid for Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford.

The purpose of Ashley and Llambias’ trip to the world’s gaming capital is unknown, although Llambias is a former boss of now-closed London casino 50 St James and once managed a similar club in Vegas.

While the duo were away, the Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust’s attempt to buy Ashley out picked up pace, with Newcastle City Council revealing it will consider giving the fans’ bid its official backing.

Newcastle’s search for new firepower is becoming ever more urgent as the Championship chasing pack hunt them down.

And the Sunday Sun understands that promotion rivals West Brom are lining up a bid for Leicester City hotshot Matty Fryatt.

I don't know why but i STILL get angry as fuck at these bastards.

What in christ is Lambias doing in Vegas when we've got 20 days to sort out our threadbare squad?

I knew we weren't going to do owt, but Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck! ;)

JOSE ENRIQUE has urged Newcastle United to make sure they give themselves a fighting chance of sealing promotion by ensuring their top targets are netted before the transfer window is bolted shut.

United will have to revert to the loan window in February if they suffer frustration this month.

And Enrique has expressed his own personal fears as the Magpies approach a crucial period of their Championship season with their crunch promotion battle with West Brom now just a week away.

There was no progress on Jermaine Beckford over the weekend and, as revealed in the Chronicle on December 29, Newcastle could yet make a firm bid for old boy Michael Chopra as they look for a proven goalscorer to help finish off the job of promotion.

And with Marlon Harewood and Zurab Khizanishvili already returned to their clubs, and Danny Simpson’s current loan deal set to expire next Monday, Enrique believes new blood is vital.

“We need new players, some have already gone,” he said.

“We’ve got a good squad, but when people go then we need to get replacements.

“I am sure that Chris has this situation already in hand – if he wants my recommendations I hear that Lionel Messi and Ronaldo would be great signings!

“But I think Chris has done an excellent job so far in adjusting the team for this division, and I’m sure he will continue to do that.

“We are in the Championship now and it’s different to the Premier League.

“There is less money to spend for transfers.”

Enrique also hopes that United can strike a deal to ensure his fellow full-back Simpson stays on at United, with Hughton hoping to extend his stay.

The Chronicle understands that United will attempt to secure Simpson for another six months on loan before then looking to see what they can offer the defender – and see what division they will be in next season.

Enrique added: “I think all of the players that have come here this season on loan have enjoyed it. And naturally they want to stay here.

"It’s a big club with a lot of fans and we’re a good bet for promotion.

"There are Premier League players who want to come here now because they want to come and play at our fabulous stadium, it’s unbelievable.

"I’d like to see Danny stay here but it will be up to Manchester to make this decision."

Meanwhile, the indications from United this morning were that the game with Plymouth looks set to go ahead after the wintry conditions eased off over the weekend.

"Deluded Geordies Rub Off On Unassuming Spaniard"

So to speak

He's clearly taking the piss with the bolded part.

Nonetheless he's exactly right. Getting in some good players now will help to get us over the promotion line IMO. We've had a lot of last gasp wins in the first half of the season, if you take them away we could easily be only sitting in a playoff position now. If we only nab a playoff position it's like a lottery as to whether we'll get through. We need to take advantage of our position now, not simply rest on our laurels and hope for the best. We've had a good run with injuries in the first part of the season, if that doesn't continue in the second we'll be in trouble pretty quickly with our current squad.

And, having handed a list of targets to managing director Derek Llambias before Christmas, Hughton admits he allows others to worry about the negotiations as he concentrates on the players he has already got.

He said: “I’ve identified the players. The on-going thing is it’s myself who identifies the players we’d like to bring in and the choices we have.

It is good to hear Enrique urging the club to drive forward and look to bring players in during January but IMO fans should not panic if there are not loads of signing during the window. 1 or 2 would be good to develop the side but January is always a time where prices are inflated and, while clubs run around chasing the likes of Emile Heskey and Ryan Babel (who cant get in their own side and would probably command larger fees than they are worth), I would rather we concentrate on bringing in good value players who really can drive the club forward. The biggest worry would be players leaving the club rather than bringing people in. Im sure Hughton has a good list of players he is interested in, so a couple of signings and maybe a few more loans from Premier League clubs would represent a great window for me and we can push on for the title.
