Rob W 0
Up until the early 90's the only keepers who punched the ball were incompetents and foreigners - it was always seen as the sign of a "dodgy keeper" - people like Banks etc always came and took the ball and God help anyone who was in their way As keepers haven't suddenly got smaller I wonder if its a fashion thing or they just don't fancy crashing to the pitch holding on to the ball?? Barney 0
incompetent. I'm sure it's just of catching the ball isn't an option due to the traffic of people in the box. I remember seeing Peruzzi doing it all the time though, when catching was an option. Edited January 4, 2010 by Barney
OTF 7214
Would have thought this was obvious. Same reason a defender will occassionally hoof a ball out rather than trying to thread a pass to a team mate. Risk vs Reward.
Ketsbaia 0
Harper loves it. You can tell he just wants to wallop everything.
Sir Bob Almighty! 0
Better safe than sorry I suppose, better bashing it up the field rather than risking a dodgy catch and drop.
The Fish 10667
Yeah, I think this is a little "jumpers for goalposts"-nostalgia for Rob tbh. It's clear why 'keepers punch the ball clear; lighter ball, more erratic flight, and has been said, risk vs reward.
Park Life 71
The clearest sign of a crap keeper there is. If I was a manager it would be a fineable offence.

wykikitoon 19806
Keepers are waaaaay too protected too, they should just come get the ball and if they dont get it 9/10 they get a foul anwyays.
Sima 0
Why catch the ball and waste seconds attempting a counter-attack when you can punch it clear, into the area of one of your attacking players and launch a counter-attack immediately? Tooj 17
Why catch the ball and waste seconds attempting a counter-attack when you can punch it clear, into the area of one of your attacking players and launch a counter-attack immediately? I remember Schmeichel doing it once for Man Utd away at Leicester, punched the ball from a corner to the half-way line and Cantona had scored within seconds. luckyluke 2
I remember a game against Boro when Schwarzer punched, missed the ball but sparked out Colin Cooper, thus hospitalising his captain.
Rob W 0
Why catch the ball and waste seconds attempting a counter-attack when you can punch it clear, into the area of one of your attacking players and launch a counter-attack immediately? because in the modern game almost all your outfielders are helping out in defence - normally there is only one player up front with htree of the opposition standing around him
