Football financial model not sustainable.

Mawhinney has steadfastly campaigned for the introduction of a salary cap throughout the Football League in a radical attempt to stem the game's soaring debt. He nods when asked if this unsustainable debt, tied inextricably to players' grossly inflated wages, is now the key issue in English football. "Overwhelmingly so. It's at the heart of the problem. After I'd told the Championship clubs we'd just done a new media deal for a 130% increase in their TV revenue one chairman said, in a meeting, 'Brian, for God's sake give us some help because if you don't put in some form of regulation we are going to piss this money up the wall on players' wages'. Quote unquote."

Players are nicking all the money as usual. ;)

My mate was just saying last night he's losing interest in football because of the lack of even level playing field. Oxford could beat Man Utd in the 80's and it wouldn't be that eye raising. Greed has consumed world sports biggest global brand as it always would. The thing is if we had our own powers, and didn't rely on those foreign cunts in Europe making decisions, we could implement wage caps potentially using our own new jurisdiction. Now though we'd have to go to Strasbourg and Brussels and they'd say you're breaking this law and that law, I hope all you pro EU cunts are happy.

How do the top-level leagues in both rugby codes have salary caps then?

Because no one cares enough to kick up a fuss.

I think you've misunderstood who dictates whether or not there's a salary cap.

UEFA could impose a cap. But they want the best players in the world playing in their competitions (The Champions League, UEFA Cup). That's how they get a worldwide audience, and none of the teams competing are short of a bob or two anyway.

THE FA could impose a cap, but it would not be enforceable in UEFA competitions. So teams would either have one squad for the domestic league/cup and another for European football....or would leave the domestic league altogether to chase bigger bucks.

There's no law against it. It just wouldn't pay any of the associations to implement it in their competitions.

The thing is though, the top players have started going to France now where there's no salary cap iirc for Rugby Union. To make it work it would have to be across Europe which is where you might encounter problems with the EU.

Fuck all to do with the EU, more to do with the fact that if England introduced a wage cap without other countries doing the same then the players would just go to Spain, Italy etc for money English clubs couldn't offer.

Needs to be done Europe wide obviously. I'd say top leagues 80k and CCC 30k.

I'd say clubs can spend 20% of their turnover on players wages, and that really would bring the game back to the people.

Bit too tight..If you're being serious.

Shouldn't be over 50% though and should be vetted before the start of the season as in Germany.

Wouldn't a cap as percentage of turnover leave the same inequality between Man U and Oxford?

Obviously but there always was, but not as insurmountable as there is today. Look at Wolfsburg. You look at history, stature, infrastructure say 3-5 years ago, who are the English equivalent? I'd say maybe Southampton or even Boro. They're never winning the league the way we are at the moment.
