"If a week is a long time in politics, it can be an even longer time in football – just ask Marlon Harewood.

Seven days ago at Deepdale, the on-loan Aston Villa striker was the man the travelling support thought should have made way, rather than Andy Carroll. Chris Hughton's decision elicited boos.

Yet at St James' Park on Saturday Harewood left the field to applause from Newcastle United fans, having struck twice in the 3-0 win over Swansea City, with Peter Lovenkrands also finding the net.

The 30 year-old is now keen to extend his loan at the Championship leaders.

"I'm here until January, and I'd love to have it extended," said Harewood. "I'd love to be part of this for the rest of the season."

It was new arrival Harewood who bore the brunt of fans' anger after Newcastle stumbled last month, but Hughton's team responded to back-to-back defeats by embarking on a five-game winning run.

"I don't score goals to prove anyone wrong, I do it for myself and for my team mates," added Harewood.

"As long as my team-mates and the manager tell me I'm doing well, that's what matters to me."

Marlon Harewood has a good record at Championship level if something of an also ran a rung higher up. He was awful in his first few games but on Saturday grabbed a couple of goals and overall looked a bit better. We extend his loan period and delay any long term decision - which I think is what Hughton has already hinted at. If he doesn't do it we don't sign him and personally I'd probably rather go for someone younger anyway. However, keep an open mind - its only wages at risk and given the current financial black holes of Barton and Geremi its relative loose change.

And no matter how badly he played fans booing one of our own off (not on Saturday I know) is brainless and only helps the opposition but this point has been made many, many times................

Aye don't see the problem with extending his loan period. He's nowt special but got a couple of decent goals at the weekend and has the potential to get more at this level.

I've always thought that Harewood was a fairly solid player, certainly enough for the championship and was a bit surprised at his poor form in his first few games. Hopefully with some goals under his belt he'll pick up.

Also, when I was in sixth form I did some work experience at the QMC in Nottingham. This guy asked me if I wanted his autograph, and was a bit upset when I told him I didn't know who he was. When I opened the Evening Post the next day it was none other than Mr Harewood, who was at the hospital visiting children.

I think he's just one of those strikers who only scores. Tracking back and putting your foot in are out of the question.

It was said he was lacking confidence when he first joined... Gentleman I think we've found the guilty party

Bet you feel stupid now, dontcha Axeman?! You massive Daily Mail reading bastard

:P

not at all, my opinion of him hasnt changed even after his 'wonderful' 2 goals last weekend. tell you what codboy, if he gets more than 1 goal per 2.5 games from now til the end of season i'll write an open letter of apology to him. Fair enough?

and i'm not massive, im actually quite svelt!

but i do occasionally read/look at the pics (delete as desired) the daily mail, along with many other fine publications.

I know he's not a top PL player by any stretch of the imagination but it does my head in how quickly fans judge players. What's Harewood got? 3 goals I think in a handful of appearances or something like that. It's possible the lad has been a bit low on confidence and lacking in fitness and I think he could do a good job in this league. It's a case of beggars can't be choosers anyway. Basically, what I'm saying is I hope the fans will give him a chance. I think Ketsbaia's right like which is one of the reasons why the fans think he's a lazy cunt and there's some truth in that tbf, which is his own fault.

I'm surprised at the amount of support afforded to Harewood in this thread. He has for th emost part been pathetic for us, and has on several occassions prevented the likes of Nile Ranger (who is actually a Newcastle player) getting more valuable experience. [Larry David]Having said that, we have him already so we might as well hold onto him for the remainder of the season. With Ameobi being injury prone he may provide good cover late on in the season.[/Larry David]

Nile Ranger's the other end of the scale for me re: fans' reactions. He's shown a bit of graft and potential so far but he hasn't even scored for us yet in a competitive game and he's perceived by many as being a player who should be getting a starting berth. Before anyone jumps all over this I'm not writing him off in any way but there already seems to be a fair bit of weight of expectation on the lad's shoulders yet in reality he's done nothing so far.
