Guest Stevie
All this talk of Liverpool being a big club, well I think they're a big historical club, it goes without saying, but should they have an episode like Leeds or ourselves have had, then we will really see just how big they are. Gates were down to 30,000 in the league under Houllier, what would happen if they ever went down. A few month ago there was a thread on their finances, losing Champions League football would be a hammer blow to them, and I'm sure someone else will come 4th this season. When you looked at their side on Saturday, Man City had a better player in ever position other than Gerrard, and that's their problem on the pitch, they are a very average midtable team without Gerrard and Torres. If those two had ANY ambition they would leave now. They're not big enough to financially complete with Arsenal, Chelsea, and Man Utd long term without investment, and I think we will see many seasons now where they're in a natural position of 6th-12th. Here's hoping anyway.

blackandwhiteboy 0
I have to admit is was good to see Liverpool fail and get knocked out. They better ensure they get fourth place this year or the likes of Torres and Mascherano may not fancy hanging around for Europa League next year. Should be interesting to see what happens if they follow-up this ecit with defeat to Everton at the weekend.

Looks like they could be fucked like. If so it's quite frightening how quickly a club that has come second in the league can disintegrate, still; we should know I guess. Thing is, Liverpool is definitely one of the better away trips imo. And whatever your reasons for disliking scousers Stevie (and the others who do), what would you rather see, a club be successful on the basis of modest resources and good management, or a club be successful on the back of billions of foreign investment from some Arab or dodgy Russian? Football will be worse off if Liverpool make way for the likes of Man city imo. Not that it will directly affect us any time soon.

I'll tell you something right now, if some Oligarch bought us tomorrow pledging to sign Kaka, Ronaldo and Messi, I wouldn't think twice about the morality of it all. Shankly brought Liverpool success and that brought a snow ball effect. They were largely a nothing club before Shankly, but all this "buying success" it all got levelled at Blackburn, complete double standards when you think Liverpool (always spent more than all bar Man Utd in the late 70's, 80's and early 90's), which is exactly what Man City are doing now, regardless where the money is coming from. I would not shed one tear if Liverpool ceased to exist, they're a bunch of arrogant, fuckwits, from your Norwegian plastic red, to your retired bit part former player. They're a scummy club with Britain's scummiest support, anything bad which happens to that club is welcomed (other than death) as far as I'm concerned. I can't think of anything I like about the club, the area or scousers collectively, you do meet some who are really decent people, but collectively up their own arse self pitying cunts. Someone once said and there's an element of truth in it, that once you've spoken to one you've spoken to them all. As for this big club thing, historically they'll always be a big club due, to the trophies they won in the 60's, 70's and 80's, and will have a worldwide fanbase. However, like I say they're the most fickle supports in world football, 30,000 under Houllier, they win the CL and they now have a waiting list. THREE seasons outside the top four would see their fanbase evapourate to 2003 levels once again. Their support, can not, will not and ever can be compared to ours. We were a far stronger club than them in principle just 6 years ago, but we fucked it up, and they fluked it up, 14 defeats in 38 league games yet they win the Champions League, they're the luckiest club there is on this earth. I respect Man Utd and even Arsenal, I can't ever respect them.

But, honest question because I don't know, were Liverpool running at a loss during their successful years? Have they ever bought the league in the way Chelsea and Blackburn did, and city are trying to do? I suspect not. It might not matter to you, but if success is now based purely on which club is backed by the biggest foreign investor then it is fucked up imo. And imagine if we could compete on level terms based on good football and financial management which would obviously reflect our fanbase. If that would happen we would at least have the potential to be a top three club, which should be the natural order of things. It's never going to happen now though. I respect Liverpool, Arsenal, and Man United for achieving what they have the proper way. The day Man City buy the league will be another nail in the premiership's coffin imo.
