Happy Face 29
About 200 European football matches are under investigation in a match-fixing inquiry, German prosecutors have said. At least three of the games were in the Champions League and another 12 were in the Uefa Europa League, officials said. Uefa representative Peter Limacher called it the biggest match-fixing scandal ever to hit Europe. On Thursday police carried out about 50 raids in Germany, the UK, Switzerland and Austria, making 17 arrests and seizing cash and property. Matches under investigation were played in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Croatia, Slovenia, Turkey, Hungary, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Austria. Cash seized Prosecutors believe a criminal gang has bribed players, coaches, referees and officials to fix games and then made money by betting on the results. The investigation is being carried out by German authorities and supported by Uefa, the European football body. Prosecutors said cash and property seized in Thursday's raids was valued at more than 1m euros (£900,000). All the matches under suspicion are believed to have taken place this year, although prosecutors did not specify if they were qualifying games or group-round matches. Speaking at a press conference in Germany, Mr Limacher said the revelations represented "clearly" the worst ever match-fixing scandal in European football. He said the arrests were proof that the detection system was working. "We feel a certain satisfaction but on the other side we are deeply affected by the scope of game manipulations by international gangs," he added. A German police spokesman told the BBC that officers in the UK had been helping in the inquiry but that no British football matches were under suspicion. UK police said they had carried out a search in the Greater London area following a request from German law enforcement officials. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8370748.stm

Milan were docked points (All though it got reduced at least once) so lost their champions league space that season hence playing Pompey last season in the waffa cup. Guest alex
That was the season before. Milan actually just finished 5th on merit (for a change you might argue) in the 2007-08 season and that's why they qualified for the Uefa Cup and ended up playing Portsmouth. The points deduction was in the 2006-07 season because the scandal broke in the summer of 2006, ironically sending Italian domestic football into probably its worst ever crisis at a time when the national team were crowned world champions. Initially Juve were going to be relgated to the 3rd flight with Lazio and Fiorentina to the 2nd division while Milan were to be docked points. In the end all the penalties were reduced with only Juve being relegated (with points deducted too and they were stripped of two league titles won in the years when the match fixing was proven to be occurring). The others were docked points but not that many in the end. Fiorentina went out of business a few years before that (about 2001/2002) and basically had to start from scratch in the 4th division so that's where the confusion might have arisen.
