You cant be serious Stevie. I can only remember a handful of good england performances in the last 4 years!!!

I know but we all know your understanding of the game. We played well in almost every group game, we played brilliantly in Holland, brilliantly in Germany, we've been excellent under Capello, utterly ridiculous overall to contradict it.

Capello is one big part of the puzzle imo, he prepares sides well and for a change they all understand where they should be standing and where they should be running. I can only see an immense piece of bad luck or donkey refereeing stopping us progressing to the final. I will stick to Brazil, us or Spain being 3 of the final two.

Nice to see you preparing to lay the blame anywhere else but on the team already.

Should make it easier to say "I told you so" should it happen

:D

Sow early. :D

Republic of Ireland ask for extra 2010 World Cup place

Fifa's Sepp Blatter has revealed the Republic of Ireland have requested a spot in the 2010 World Cup finals as an extra team after their play-off defeat.

The Republic lost to an extra-time goal against France when Thierry Henry handled the ball during the build-up.

More to follow.

 I think it's time to get over it.

I agree with the comments about Englands squad player for player being one of the best in the world at the moment. Sure, you're a bit lacking in a world class keeper (although you have quite a few half decent one's to choose from) and maybe a bit short for options up front but every team has it's weak spots.

The trouble with England for me in recent years, apart from poor management has been a mental problem. Something about the German and Italian teams has allowed them to grind out the results when needed in the world cup and progress far beyond what the quality of their squads would suggest). One of these problems seems to be that the likes of the Germans and Italians pace themselves better as statistic show that in recent world cups England concede most goals in the latter stages of matches whereas Italy score a lot of late goals, playing to the final whistle etc etc.

However, these problems at least look like they are being ironed out by Capello so I really do think you have a good chance of at least getting to the semis next summer. As someone else pointed out though, luck plays a huge factor in the world cup (especially as there are very few games in the tournament) and there's nothing that can be done about getting a shit group or a bad referree.

The draw is Friday, anything said about seedings yet? If it;s on FIFA rankings we're in the second pot which will be a joke.

Normally, based on a mixture of current seedings and recent Euros and WCs isn't it?

Aye but they've normally announced who's in what pot by now.

Don't think the Euro form will figure in it (how could it really - because how could you compare a European side with say Argentina). This is how it was calculated for 2006:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_FIFA_World_Cup_seeding

Speculation is that more or less the same formula will be used this time around. So it will be a combination of the rankings across the 3 years preceeding the World Cup (07, 08, 09) as well as the rank from the last two World Cups. If this was the case I'd say England will fall inside the first pot.

England among top seeds for World Cup draw

England will be among the top seeds for Friday’s World Cup draw, having scraped in ahead of Portugal and France.

It means that, although they could yet be drawn in the same group as either Portugal or France, Fabio Capello’s team will avoid being drawn against any of the favourites, such as Brazil, Spain or Italy, the holders. Holland also breathed a sigh of relief, having been named among the top seeds.

As feared, the World Cup organising committee elected to change the seeding regulations at their meeting at Cape Town’s international convention centre this morning. At the previous two tournaments, seedings have been calculated on two factors – positions in the Fifa world rankings and performance in recent tournaments.

The FA had hoped that the same formula would be used, which would have seen England seeded, but instead the formula was changed purely to reflect the Fifa rankings. There had been fears that any rankings-based calculations would reflect rankings over a previous two-year or three-year period, which would have excluded England, whose ranking briefly dipped dramatically after their failure to qualify for Euro 2008, but instead Fifa preferred to use the October rankings, in which England were ranked seventh and thus scraped into the first pot of seeds along with South Africa, the hosts.

This was a source of particular relief for England, who had slipped to ninth in the most recent rankings, published last month. Those rankings were dismissed from consideration because of the imbalance caused by the fact that countries such as Portugal and France played in two-legged qualification play-offs, where more ranking points were available than in friendly matches.

Beyond the first group of seeded teams, the countries have been placed in pots according to geographic factors. Pot two consists of the eight remaining European teams, including Portugal and France; pot three consists of the three remaining South American teams and the five remaining African nations; pot four consists of all the teams left over, i.e. three from North and Central America, four from Asia (including Australia, who are part of the Asian Football Confederation) and New Zealand.

The worst-case scenario for a seeded team would arguably mean being placed in the same group as France (or Portugal), United States (or Mexico) and Ivory Coast. The best-case scenario for a seeded team would be to be drawn with New Zealand, Algeria and one of the weaker European qualifiers, such as Slovenia or Switzerland.

POT ONE: South Africa, Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Holland, Italy, Germany, England

POT TWO: Portugal, France, Denmark, Slovenia, Greece, Slovakia, Serbia, Switzerland

POT THREE: USA: Mexico, Honduras, South Korea, North Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand

POT FOUR: Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Nigeria, Algeria

Looks like I'll be taking the whole of June off. 14 different work days where there's 3pm kick offs. The weekend kick offs are 1230, 3pm, and 730pm, with the week 3 and 730. Bit shit really, we could have three England group games played when everyones at work.

I may be a bit behind the times but I haven't seen a mention of Ireland's pathetic attempts at trying to get in to the World Cup as a 33rd team. What a bunch of losers.

Aye because we all know England officials and supporters would've been much more dignified about it wouldn't we?

Oh, they'd have been much, much worse. The referee would have retired by now and Henry would be getting police protection in Spain. Look what happened to that ref when he disallowed Sol Campbell's goal in 2004 But that doesn't mean the Irish are vindicated.

From what the FAI are saying, it was mentioned briefly and wasn't supposed to be made public. Of course Blatter comes out and tells the world.

Tbh I think the notion was so ridiculous the FAI deserved it.

why does every report I have read about the world cup draw so far has United States down as making up a group of death, I dont see any teams in pots 2 and 3 we should be worried about for the groups.

Would not like us to get Portugal or France but think we could take them.

Serbia would be tough but were better than them too.
