I think he's got a red bandanna on underneath which doesn't make it look obvious. Just took apart the clip frame by frame. It is his hat that fall back to the ground. I can't be sure (too much movement between frames), but I think the hammer head leaves the shaft at a totally different angle to the rest of the hammer and the blokes arms.
