Renton 21983
Not sure if this has been covered before but if so I can't finds it. I'm just curious about what people generally tip and if I'm in line with what's expected. So here goes. Restaurant - about 10% if a sevice charge hasn't been added (none if it has been). Are you supposed to tip in pubs or cafes though? Bar - I can honestly say I have never tipped a barman or barmaid in my life in this country. I may leave a bit of change when abroad. In America though a $1 tip seems to be mandatory if you want served again. Taxi - usually about 10% or a quid, whichever is smaller. Takeaway delivery - Round it up to nearest pound or add an extra pound or so. Maid - never in this country. About a euro or equivalent per day when abroad. Bell boy - try to avoid these but if I have to then about a euro per bag. Gave a $2 tip in New York once and the bell boy through my bags at me! Tour guides - a couple of euros if they're good. Paper boy - a fiver at Christmas. Anything I've missed? And am I a tight wad?
Craig 6700
Generally 10% in a restaurant or cab... Refuse to tip through credit card ever since I learned that you're tipping the restaurant and not the person who's serving you (i.e. it goes into a central fund and you're effectively paying more for your meal than rewarding someone for good service). I always leave 10% in cash on the table
Ketsbaia 0
Maybe i'm just a cheap cunt but I never go out my way to tip and when I do I don't get my calculator and work it out. If i've had good service in a restaurant I hoy a few quid extra down, taxi and takeaway usually get it rounded up to the nearest quid if they're on time etc. As for tipping in bars? Nee chance. Guest alex
I hate those fucking bogs, normally in the same types of bars where you get your change on a tray, where they want a tip for giving you some soap to wash your hands. Feel a bit sorry for the people doing it all the same like. Other than that, probably about the same as you Renton although usually leave about a fiver in a restaurant if 10-15% isn't going to be more than 2 or 3 quid like if you're out for lunch or something. Also used to tip the postie and the binmen at Xmas but I never see them these days.

Completely counterproductive for the bar imo as I will simply go elsewhere, can't cope with the awkwardness (no way am I tipping them). I remember once I needed a dump in Amsterdam so went for a McShit. Anyway, the cubicles were full so I left without tipping, I was virtually assaulted by the cleaner lady. In a fucking McDonalds ffs! Agree with Craig and always leave tips in cash. I would like to tip the bin men but never meet them.
Happy Face 29
I've never thought of calculating it as a percentage. I always just round up. If the cab comes to £19.90 I'd hoy an extra couple of quid on like. I wouldn't leave the driver with 10p. Say your cab costs £5.20 do you rummage in your man purse for the 52p? Guest alex
There's a proper miserable cunt who works for Blueline who I've been picked up on a Friday/Saturday night a couple of times. He starts moaning the second you get in about how narrow the street is and how you can't get turned round, making a proper big deal about it, then gives you the silent treatment only to perk up about a minute before he drops with some proper moribund chat about two minutes before he drops you off in the hope of a tip. I think I gave him a tenner when it came to about £9.80 once. I certainly showed him
ewerk 31195
Restaurants - I usually end up tipping unless the service has been noticeably poor, normally around 10% Taxis - I'll tip if the driver is friendly and makes an effort to chat Don't bother tipping for anything else. Even when I do tip it's often begrudgingly, I don't get why I should tip someone for simply doing their job, yes if they've exceeded my expectations then fair enough but too often I tip in restaurants for standard service. The Fish 10963
The only way I tip bar staff is if I've been in that pub all night and the barman/barmaid has been good value. Even then it's more likely to be "and get yourself one" raher than "keep the change" taxis I round up to a reasonable amount unless they've been a dick in which case I'll happily scrape out the exact fare. Restaurants it's between a fiver or 10% whichever is easiest. Not going to just leave a fiver tip for a table bill that's well over £100 but I won't leave a 50% tip on a £10 bill either. It's daft because it's the waiter you're tipping but invariably the better waiters are in the better restaurants.

Renton 21983
Forgot to add, what about barbers? Never sure what the norm is here, although I'll usually round it up to a tenner at Christmas.
Andrew 4857
restaurants I'll leave 10-20% depending on the price of the food and the service bar- never, its an american thing to me, that said there are a couple of places in town where ive gotten to know some ofthe staff so ill usually buy them one if im there all night taxi - rarely, taxis are insanely overpriced anyway especially black cabs who like to start with £2-3 on the meter barber - I go to a posh place for my hair doing so they're getting plenty of money off me in the first place notreally come across the others tbh, live with parents and only been abroad without them once Edited November 16, 2009 by Andrew

NJS 4411
Generally see it as a chance to get rid of shrapnel (but not copper) but have never really thought about it too much. A few times I've got a taxi home from Stansted and paid for the taxi at the desk there on a card (£25/30) and felt awkward as to whether I should give the bloke a couple of quid at the end - usually I do. Jill 0
Restaurants, around 10% if the service has been good. Don't mind looking like a twat and not tipping if I've not been impressed with the service though. Taxi drivers normally get an extra couple of quid if they've been ok, if I didn't enjoy the journey though I just wait for my change. Takeaway, usually round up, don't always bother though tbh. Don't tip in bars or have a need for any of the other things mentioned in the OP.
snakehips 0
Pretty much what has been said. What fucks me off is waitresses who tell you it's their birthday *smile smile smile* in the hope of better tips. Yeah, yeah, bitch, your 10% has just decreased. I usually give the lad/lass who delivers the Chinese or Indian a few quid extra as I like them a lot ;) Window cleaner gets a tip at Christmas every year, and told me last year that we are virtually the only folk in our street who gives him and his mate something. Tight fuckers.
trophyshy 7084
I used to deliver pizzas so always give them a couple of quid. Restaurant is based on the quality of service. 10 - 15%. No tip if shitty service. Sorry. And I always ask if the tip on the card machine will go driectly to them. If not then cash on the table. Toilet bloke gets a quid early on and I'll usually have a chat and explain that later on when I am twatted he'll get nout. Taxis is rounding up plus a quid. Has anyone tried inappropriate tipping? I have tried with bus drivers and toll booth attendants. Both causing much confusion. Don't forget yer binmen at Xmas! Shitty job and decreasing pay, try and bung them a bottle of Sherry for their last round.

I was a bit suprised when the guy hugged me and wished me a wonderful life. Wasn't til I got home I checked and realised I had given him over a weeks salary. On a sort of related note, I've been on some trips to Europe for our games where the patronage of certain bars has got the reaction which we've jokingly referred to as "putting their kids through college" - I know it sounds patronising but I always found the gratitude to be a good memory of the trip. Brock Manson 0
At a restaurant I give 10%, but I never tip cab drivers (sorry Christmas Tree), because 1) If ever I use a taxi, I can't really afford to waste the money and 2) because all cab drivers are cunts. Happy Face 29
With my dad being a cabbie he's ingrained in me a strict over-tipping policy for cab drivers. Brierdene do a set price of £11 to or from town and I always give them £15 which is a 36% tip. Always round up haircuts to a tenner. Probably cheapest when it comes to restaurants...mainly because they expect it most. Never given a penny to a bin man or a postman. Don't get any papers or milk delivered or windows cleaned.
