so you admit that they don't always get 50,000 crowds and are as fickle as anybody else.

I will dig out the stats later.

What I'm saying is that you can't knock attendances when the fans are protesting against a shit board.

Jesus Christ, are you being deliberately thick? There were mass boycotts going on, that's different from not bothering with the match because the team/board were shite.

they were shite were they ? They stop going when they were shite ? Thats the whole point, they stop going when they are perceived to be "shite" which in their league isn't winning cups. What do you think would happen if they were fighing relegation battles ?

Fact is that when Celtic were managed by a string of poor managers ie John Barnes, and only finished 4th in their league, their crowds regularly dropped to 20,000

When was that like?

What age are you Ewerk if you don't mind me asking, under 22? 1993 for one, its happened loads of times throughout their history. Generally from the mid 70s onwards even when they were doing well they'd get 6-25,000 against general Scottish sides, and 45-62,000 against Rangers and that was it. Rangers gates were even worse before Souness came in.

In recent times Celtic were down to 30,000 when Barnes was the manager for some league games, that's only 9 or 10 years ago. If they don't win regularly they don't go, as I said though Rangers are probably even more fickle than them.

My point was, what has John Barnes got to do with Celtic finishing 4th and getting low crowds?

If you had a fucking clue then you'd realise that in 93/94 Celtic as a club were fucked. Their owners had fucked them financially, they were within 20 mins of going bust and the fans were taking part in organised boycotts of games in protest at the board. It had fuck all to do with a lack of interest in the game.

And for the record I'm not a Celtic fan nor do I want them playing in England.

I've got more of a clue than you'll ever have ya daft cunt, that explains 1993, plus they played at Hampden the next season, but in the past even when they've been doing ok, the crowds weren't there, 4,000 they've had at Celtic Park for League games, in the not too distant past, I'm not rubbishing the club, I'm just rubbishing the myths about two clubs who you would think would take the Premiership by storm they way certain people talk about them and their past supports, which in general were inferior to our own, despite a history of winning 6-8 trophies + each decade.

They had gates of 4,000 in the 80's, but to be fair I think they were using the excuse of playing that season at Hampden Park for these figures you've quoted. Funny that Partick game 16,000, do you know who their next who game was against, and a 36,000 sell out  ? Shouldn't be an excuse really, and it was also a season Fergus McCann had already assumed control so there were no boycots, I know they shelled out a fortune on van Hooijdonk and Andy Thom that season.

Figures like this should kill the myth that they are "special". Anybody goes to watch a winning team. What price all the Liverpool supporters dotted all over the UK will disappear if they continue falling and it continues longer term, the opposite of which has seen the growth in Chelsea supporters.

Just common sense really. I'm not rubbish the club either, even though I hate the bigotry and the way they behave when they have been here - ditto Rangers in 1969 as I was there - just pointing out that they would only be one of a number of clubs with potential big support if they are successful, but we should all know that you have to be successful and down here it is a completely different ball game to dominating a league composed basically of small towns the size of somewhere like Darlington at best.

it’ll never happen anyway unless the EPL collapses.

It really would be turkeys voting for Xmas.

Are they really expecting the EPL clubs to vote for jettisoning not just 3 teams (due to relegation) but an additional 2 (into the second tier) and 2 more replaced by Celtic and Rangers?

Why don’t they get celtic league started, with the Scots, Welsh, Irish and N Irish – and really set the bigotry off to a different level!

Good shout you know that, and maybe the Irish people would start supporting their local IRISH clubs. In all seriousness though based on current squads if you had a league of Celtic, Swansea, Rangers, Linfield, Derry, Cork, Aberdeen, Glentoran, Hearts, Wrexham, Cardiff etc... I would put every penny I could muster on Cardiff City winning it.

A celtic league is an interesting idea. I can't see the atlantic league idea with scottish/dutch/belgian/scandinavian teams being that popular and therefore unlikely to raise extra tv revenue which is the root of the problem.

If you put the German league in there too, which is totallly shit presently they might. PSV, Ajax, Feyenoord, Benfica, SL, Porto, Celtic, Rangers, Bayern, BVB, S04, HSV, B04L, Anderlecht, Standard, FC Kopehaven would be a canny league. It wouldn't rival the Premiership imo, but it would certainly be better than what they have presently.

As Stevie says, Cardiff would have a good chance of winning it, which would make up for them being the only ones who could actually loose out by joining a celtic league.

I dread to think the outcome of all those Rangers fans touring the RoI though!

Think he's getting confused as Barnes took over after the '98 World Cup I think because I remember him having the idea of copying their 4-2-2-2 formation with the width coming from the full-backs and two attacking midfielders. That was theory anyway. I think Celtic came 4th in the early 90s when they were skint and Rangers were on a long run of consecutive titles though. No idea what gates they were getting like.

I have the Rothmans from 1994-95 when they finished 4th. I'll dig it out later.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, I was just saying I didn't think it was under John Barnes. That was all.

Bloody OOTs trying to join our league

This proposal was all about Rangers and Celtic getting their piggy snouts in the trough. They've been rightly sent packing imo. They've got absolutely nothing to do with English football, nor should they, and just because they've run out of money in their own poxy league is no reason to join ours.

It's ironic that Gartside is bleeting on about the Premier league becoming less and less competitive, and cash should be spread more evenly, whilst endorsing a move that would presumably spell financial death for the SPL. How would he feel if the Big 4 in England took themselves off to play in a super league, leaving Bolton to play the likes of Hull, Wigan and Everton week in, week out. Bloody hypocrite.

Boro's current position shows we should have just let the cunts in so we could all cuff them to finally shut them up. Rangers striker is Kenny Miller end of any argument about them being good tbh.
