Sting and the police

Currently listening to the very best of sting and the police and can't help feeling how underated they were / are.

The melodies and the lyrics are quite superb and still seem so timeless 20 odd years later.

Would really like to see them live if they ever get back on the road.

Fantastic.

I've got a signed (by Sting only) vinyl copy of 'Zenyatta Mondatta'. I used to love them when I was little. My uncle got me it as he used to knock about with his bro (who had a bar in Shitley Bay).

I think you've underrated them. Not everyone else. They've gained ample recognition off the back of 5 albums.

I like "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" the jibberish classic.

Nice facts and figures (mainly from when they were in their pomp) but the tour figures may highlight what I mean.

The public obviously love them but I wouldnt have said they were talked about in the same regards as other bands who seemed to get drooled about.

I don't know how you argue they were underrated though. They were massive back in the day. I must admit the reunion passed me by however. I saw Sting on the telly recently and read an interview in Sunday Times the other week as well. You have to respect people who don't change and he's still a reet twat.

Most people feel that way about bands they happen to like though. Which other bands have you got in mind?

Bearded Sting and his sea shanty on Jules Holland was truly awful.

In the most unusual segway I've seen in a while, The Foo Fighters came on next with Times Like These, they were amazing..

Guess its just one of those "feelings". Recently bought the "Best of Sting and The Police" for the I Phone so really only just started paying attention to them again after so long. Listening to it as an adult, rather than a kid I was taken aback by the whole quality of the lyrics, music and general timelessness of a lot of their songs.

Im not a big music junkie but you hear talkalots on the TV Radio going on about U2, Oasis etc etc but I cant recall people talking about The Police with the same status and esteem.

Regardless, like you im gutted that Ive missed the re-union.

Nice facts and figures

I love that method of dismissing facts as if they cloud the issue.

XTC were a far better band and never got close to the widespread recognition The Police got.

Unfortunately for XTC Andy Partridges stage fright did them no favours.

The Police were average, safe, perfect for someone who will grow into easy listening.

Not sure if you're being deliberately obtuse there but I wouldn't have gone to see them in any case.

He's up there with Phil Collins imo.

Phil Collins aint bad, same as Elton John. At least they were pretty original in their time, with their own distinctive sounds. These days all these wanky bands do my head in, half them either try to copy off the Libertines and fail, and half them do the same with Oasis and fail. Don't get me started on the wank coming out of American like fuckin cunts of Leon, some of their songs, I want to murder someone when I hear them!

I was taking the piss like. Don't mind a bit of 70s Elton John though. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road sort of era.

OK, I've got the album CT referred to on the OP on my MP3, and given it a listen. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

CT, I'm curious why you rate their music lyrically? Most of it is banal beyond belief imo, as bad as Oasis if not worse. Or am I missing some deep meanings in songs like Walking on the Moon and a Doo dooo dahhh?

Roxanne is an absolute classic like.
