Germany keeper dies in accident

Germany and Hannover 96 goalkeeper Robert Enke, 32, has died after being hit by a train, police have confirmed.

The German football federation (DFB) said in a statement: "The German team has learned of the death of Robert Enke with great shock.

"National team coach Joachim Loew and manager Oliver Bierhoff said: 'We are all shocked, we are speechless'."

Enke played eight times for Germany and also for clubs Benfica, Barcelona and Borussia Moenchengladbach.

He made his international debut aged 31 and became Germany's number one keeper after Jens Lehmann retired from internationals at the end of Euro 2008.

Enke had missed Germany's last four matches with a virus but returned for his club at the weekend.

Loew had indicated that Enke was in pole position for the number one jersey at next year's World Cup finals in South Africa.

Enke's daughter Lara died in 2006 of a rare heart condition when she was just two. He leaves behind his wife, Teresa, and an eight-month-old daughter the couple had adopted earlier this year.

Dr Theo Zwanziger, president of the DFB, said that the football community in Germany "are deeply distressed and in mourning".

He added: "All our sympathy goes to the wife of Robert Enke and his family."

 +

Really sad. Good keeper and seemed like a very nice bloke. Allegedly was too weak for the business and suffered from depression.

Lost his daughter a few years ago too didn't he?

Yes, adopted a girl not too long ago.

He struggled to cope with pressure during his time at Barca and in Turkey (were he cancelled his contract after one very poor game). Though he always seemed very calm both on and off the pitch. Maybe he should have done what Deisler did and retire early.

His wife just held a press conference. Seemed impressively brave.

Enke suffered from depressions for several years, first got treatment in 2003 during his disappointing spell abroad then again a couple of weeks ago. He didn't want to go to a clinic to protect his family and his career. He also feared he would lose his adopted daughter because of his illness.

It's strange, normally I don't care about these (public) tragedies, but I've to admit that this is something I do find difficult to stomach. Enke was one of the most modest and intelligent professionals around. It really seems quite absurd that he killed himself especially thinking that he was reluctant to get more treatment to protect his family and career...

Fucking cowards way out when you have a wife and young child who rely on you. Depression or not.

If you spell your name backwards you get reffins. How odd.

By the way i tend to agree with you but if your mind is gone you are not thinking logically.

Anyway waste of a life.
