An immense city to visit tbf in terms of heritage, culture, entertainment and practically anything you care to mention.

Terrible post-Blitz architecture makes it look horribly average in many places though (anything up to the reatively recent re-building projects in fact). Looked fucking dreadful in American Werewolf last night on Five. Jenny Agutter aside, obviously.

I've always thought the area between Waterloo and London Bridge has horrific architecture, epitomised by Guy's Hospital which for my money is the biggest architectural eyesore in the UK.

You aint seen Bridgewater Place then?

That's like the Taj Mahal compared to what I was on about.....

Centre point is a bit shit given it's location like.

It's horrible. Mind you, so's most of that neck of the woods. There's some canny pubs/bars down a few of the Soho side-streets (and no, I'm not just talking about G-A-Y Bar and its ilk ), but otherwise I'd happily avoid anywhere within a stone's throw of Tottenham Court Road tube for the rest of my days.

I think it's better to put London in context for people without any first hand experience of what it is. Look at it like this London as one entity, not England, just London on it's own is more significant than 90% of countries. In terms of GDP, if London was a country, it would be the 18th richest in the world. It would have a larger GDP than Poland with 40m people, Indonesia with 150m people, Belgium, Sweden, Greece, Thailand, Iran, Argentina, Malaysia, Ireland and Portugal combined, and Pakistan, Egypt and Ukraine combined. I'm just trying to illustrate what a global hub the place is and how hard it is to judge such a vast place, with so many opportunities, a multinational, multiethnic centre of life really. We've all seen the shit side to London, but you have to understand it's significance in the world, in many respects, it's the capital of the world. The bridge between Europe and America, more money changes hands in London than any of city in the world on a daily basis, you need to grasp what the place is. We should be proud to have what the New York Times, paper of the city which has the only other contender, describe it as the most important city in the world.

Regards living there, I'd only consider it if I earned a large salary, in fact it would have to be approaching six figures. That's not going to happen unfortunately.

Being poor and living in London would be hell. Most people I know have tended to live there for a few years in their twenties but have escaped by their thirties. Personally, I'm glad to just visit the place occasionally for pleasure or work.

One thing that is increasingly annoying is the price of the train down mind. Unless I have planned it way ahead, flying is usually the best option nowadays. Ridiculous.

See, Renton, I'm on a modest wage and I have a brilliant time here, out most nights, taking in live shows and stuff. Unless you meant staying here for the rest of your life? Yeah I'd imagine bringing up kiss and retiring and such would be very expensive in London

Aye, but you never get your turn in at the bar.

Really? My fella and I have a joint household income of half those magical six figures, yet it's still more than worth our while being here. Music-wise, every global tour worth its salt ends up here, which in itself is enough to keep us here for the time being since we hit the live music scene two or three times a month as standard (and obviously there's the added bonus of S'oH'o being Ghey Central, though I accept that even the old Pink Triangle isn't too shabby these days).

I really don't get how anyone earning a decent penny - and I suppose I mean by average UK standards here, not the inflated proportions of the City, but still - can't get by as long as they apply the basic principles of standard, adult-issue financial management, just as long as they actively want to be here while knowing (like us, at least) that the Great Settling And Becoming Old Farts will ultimately take place elsewhere.

Gargling comedian spunk at the stage door doesn't qualify as a healthy nightlife btw.

How much is an Oyster card even? Rent? Mortgage? Etc.

My brother and his wife were both on a good whack in London but had a worse quality of life than me. The other thing I find funny talking to native Londoners is them going on about how culturally deprived I am living in Newcastle. But I can almost guarantee that I will have been to more gigs and shows in London in a given year than they will have been to. And that's before the stuff I've done in Newcastle and neighbouring cities (been to Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds and Edinburgh this year). And then of course you're miles from the beautiful wild parts of the UK, but near shite places like Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, and Milton Keynes.

Mind, I'm envious of the airports and the Eurostar.

Fair enough I guess. So Meenzer, are you there out of choice, or is there any other UK city you'd prefer? I just feel I can get the benefits of London without living there, while enjoying the benefits here. Great place to visit, not a great place to live etc. Detachment from the Lakes, Northumberland coast, and Scotland would be a deal breaker for me in any case as I have said, mind, I'm an old fart.

Banch of norvan mahnkeys!

In all seriousness, I went out with four friends and had a round of cocktails, shared starter platters, main courses and a couple of bottles of wine and the table's bill came to around £50 which is un-fahkin-believable and not as rare as you might think. Plenty of pubs and restaurants are happy to dole out 50% off bills, just to get you through the door.

Oh and not for nothing, I was at the Millwall - AFC Wimbledon Fa Cup game last night.... now there's some cunts right there, giving it "easy easy" when beating a non-league side 2-0... classy fellows.

Bit of both - I'm here because my fella was still studying here when I moved back to be with him. He's done now, but there's still more opportunities here than elsewhere in the charity sector he's landed in, so it's London for the time being. Neither of us bears any illusion that we'll be here long-term, but as something temporary to make the most of, we're making the most of it rather than being miserable.

Trust me, I am too. On the flip side, the music scenes we're into - country/Americana, for one - often see people playing London then buggering off to Ireland for five days before flying back to the States. And for all we may have the likes of Stevenage and Dartford on the doorstep, there's also dirt-cheap flights to every corner of Europe to the extent that you don't get from Newcastle (unless your vision of Europe is limited to a dozen cities tops), so...

4000 MK Dons I heard too. Give me the old Lions over Tottenham and West Ham personally any day.

4000 MK Dons? Shame on you, I'd have thought you'd be right behind AFC

Never met a Millwall fan I didn't think was a bigot with a Napoleon complex
