Toonpack 9934
Fail to see what the fuss is tbh You're fucking kidding, right? Not at all, sports grounds around the world are being renamed (or relocated) all the time at least we've got the @St James Park left. It's a name at the end of the day, has no influence at all other than that. It's akin to getting upset becasue the new kit isn't how you'd quite like it. Means nowt

Means nowt How you can say 'it means nowt' is beyond me. The name change is the height of tackiness and makes the club lesser if you know what I mean. Everything went quiet as no Business out there wanted to know and now it seems as if they've taken the huff and are just going to give free advertising to SD. It's quite important to the status of our club to play at St. James' Park and not Sportsdirect@St.James.com if you ask me.
Giraffidae 0
How many other grounds have a sponsor that doesn't bring any income in, TP? especially when you compare the Emirates naming paid £100m, a third of the cost of building that stadium for Arsenal. Ashley’s only doing this as a temporary measure to encourage future financing — yeh right! SportsDirect to give NUFC £100m?

peasepud 59
It is with surprise and not a small degree of sadness that the Trust Board notes the recent planning application placed by the club for new signage to be erected on the side of St. James' Park. The planning application can be found here Examination of the plans clearly shows that the signage will read “SportsDirect.com@St. James' Park”. This stadium rebranding first raised its ugly head in November 2009 and was called by The Independent “a move that is likely to mean yet more ridicule for the club”. It is hard to disagree. At the same time Derek Llambias said “We will showcase Sports Direct until the end of the season. I'm sure we're going to get a sponsor in for next season.” This statement would therefore raise more questions about the current planning application in place. If this rebranding does go ahead and the new sponsor is indeed SportsDirect.com then how much money has been generated by this new revenue stream and what assurances are there that this will be used to strengthen the first team squad? If this is not he case then what grounds does the club feel it is appropriate to go ahead with any rebranding exercise following the reaction of the clubs supporters last November? Even manager Chris Hughton said "I sympathise with the supporters. I am quite sure though that, in everybody's eyes, St. James' Park will always be St. James' Park.” NUST raised a petition that collected 30,000 names, one for every season ticket holder at St James’ Park this year, and numerous other websites, blogs, groups and individual supporters lodged complaints and let their feelings be known. We expect that this will happen again as we revisit an issue that should have remained closed without proper consultation with the lifeblood of NUFC, the fans. You can lodge your objections directly online here, (although you will to register with the site first here) or by email at planning.control@newcastle.gov.ukThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. trophyshy 7084
On balance, we've all been wandering round with advertising slogans on our chests for a few decades now. Just another step along in the commercialisation of NUFC. I suppose it would be more palatable if we were competing where we really should be, but we're seemingly a high st bargain basement kind of club now, funny that. Monkeys Fist 43066
What would make it stick in the craw less is if it was a paying sponsor going on the signs. I wonder what the cost to NUFC is of erecting this free advert for the Fat Mans chav shop?

Renton 21985
So it sounds like the exterior aesthetics of the ground are going to be completely ruined - I still haven't got used to that monstrousity of a sign above the Gallowgate end yet ffs. Trouble is everything about Ashley is cheap and tacky, and we are constantly tainted with association to him and his scummy businesses. Regarding the Emirates, it's obviously completely different. That was a new and unamed ground and the financial contribution of the airline was huge (an external source, as has been noted). The outside of their ground looks fantastic when you pass it on the train (haven't been in there yet). Ours looks good too, but with massive cheap Sports Direct billboards stuck to it advertising the lates BOGOF on Mike Ashley's slave labour manufactured shite? Howmanheyman 33834
Just heard that the council have backed Ashleys advertising. Has anyone read the objectors views? Very few bad ones last time I looked, no personal abuse just good points on the heritage of the club/City. Completely ignored by the council. Remember this if the fuckers ever knock on your door or post one of their leaflets and you're in the house.

Seems a silly thing to do. It will happen regardless of who does it, so it may at least go to a local mob. It's not as if they're working on the Death Star.
