Goddamn Bastad Government

Bloody Government are trying to shove ANOTHER infringement on Civil Liberties without ANY debate. How do you fancy any jumped-up little toss-pot of a Council Official freezing your Bank Account, searching your house, nicking your prize possessions or sending the Bailiffs in because you forgot to pay your Poll Tax or 'jumped' the Metro? (among other 'minor' offences-whatever they decide they are!)

The amount of times I've 'forgotten' to pay my council tax. Happens all the time.

Just happened to me. I foolishly assumed that, since I was moving house just round the corner and comfortably within the same borough, they'd keep my direct debit going. They didn't. Cue angry letters in red and black type.

Can't read the article as the link doesn't work for me so (assuming of course AA isn't putting a spin on this  )but if you jump the Metro you can pay a derisory on the spot fine (£20) then have another 21 days to pay it if you don't have the money on you iirc so it's fair enough if you're taken to court after failing to do that.

It must only be in England that people pay to use the underground...When I lived in Paris most (under 30) would laugh at paying and there are droves here in Hamburg who never pay on the U-Bahn. Just make these services free and remove the ticket barriers....

Most of them will probably have a criminal record because of it though...

And who's going to make for the services?

Maybe they could get companies to sponsor the stops?

How would you maintain the lines etc? Its a way of getting cars of the roads though.

Well it would obviously come from tax revenue so 'free public transport' is a misnomer anyway. Although the Metro practically is free anyway given the lack of barriers, inspectors and low fines. There's some logic to what is one of Parky all-time favourite subjects like.

See, that's the kind of thinking we should be looking at. To get the public to pay for public transport is silly. Long distance trains fair enough, but in inner cities the green thing to do is make travel free.

They did that with the bus stops in Mainz. Overnight, Höfchen became "Höfchen - Listmann" and Elbestraße was happily announced as "Elbestraße - Kentucky Frait Tschickn".

I've never really understood the logic behind the Metro at all. Either pay the money to install Oyster-style barriers throughout, even at street-level stations, or pay the money to employ a shitload of inspectors. Doing neither is just baffling.

Make the underground free at weekends and make driving into cities with your family impossible or so expensive it makes a grown man cry. Make all art galleries that get public money free on Sundays etc...Let the people live and be happy. It's easy this politics lark.

Same here. You'd think the extra inspectors would pay for themselves anyway given how many people don't pay and it would create jobs too. Or put barriers in. Baffling, like you say. When I used to get the Metro to work they would have a purge at the station every now and again and at a rough guess I'd say about one third didn't pay. I used to work with a lass there who never paid because loads of other people didn't and it was more cost effective just to pay the fine

OMG!!11 If it's free it will all fall apart!!!1111111one..

The company I work for has just got work with Metronet here to survey the whole underground in London at the cost of £150m, thats the surveying of it, not the works that could come from it. Yes its a 5 year contract however that a substantial cost and as you are aware a lot of it is victorian engineering.

We have also got the contract for the NY Subway and thats a cost of $2b.

Its not cheap and like Alex said its you or I (tax payers) that pay for it in the end so its not really free.

With all due respect 2 billion dollars in the scheme of things is peanuts. Free to use is perhaps a better term, but it don't make keyboard fingers as twitchy as when I say 'free'. For the record water should be 'free' as well.
