JonGoodwyn 1
I love Jason Becker, Cacophony were fantastic, Jasons tone was a bit lame, but the playing was incredible.

Billy Castell 0
I've seen packages on Amazon where you get an electric gituar, usually an Explorer, an amp and other bits and bobs for about £100. Would that be a good start for a beginner with like myself? Must be better value than the £3,500 Les Paul I saw on Amazon. Can't believe how much they can be. No IMO if you start out that cheap the crapiness of the gear will only discourage you, spending £100 more than that would get you some cracking beginner stuff (I dunno whether thats feasible or not) http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/74854 thats pretty similar to what I started out with, look at sites that specialise in instruments rather than amazon and such if you feel confident enough get to a shop, rimmers in blackburn is alright its where I got my first and the one in leyland is twice the size of that if you've any mates who play ask them to go with you, guitar shop staff can be intimidating when they're peering over your shoulder
Billy Castell 0
Poop. I guess it was too good to be true. So the quality is really that bad then? I'd like to go to a local shop in Coventry, but I'm slightly hesitant for the reason you say Andrew. What would people say are reliable, versatile brands for the beginner on a budget to look out for? This is all for the future, as I don't think anyone would except a hand written IOU note or monopoly money.
Billy Castell 0
Registered with e-bay, so I'll have a look there every so often. There was a generic guitar plus amp for £20-30 with 5 minutes to go, it was in Warwickshire (i.e. local), but I had no money to bid for it. Anyone bought any equipment recently, or played with an old one in their collection for the first time in years?

Andrew 4748
gutted my carvin today and replaced all the old electronics with shiny new components, need to widen the holes in the body slightly to fit the new stems on the pots, looking forward to finally having 2 fully functioning guitars, I replaced the pups in it when I got it but not the other components with them so it was a bit of a botch job and its never worked right, finally got round to sorting it pic of it from a while ago with new pickups pic of the old ones
Andrew 4748
got back into playing a lot lately, not been a serious player for a few years, decided to do things right this time, learn scales, technique to make me a better player http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/index.php started using Mark Weins site based on seeing mark post around harmony central and quite enjoying them so far, they arent long lessons just a youtube video and exercises marked out in tab below but they give you what you need with licence to play around on your own with the ideas hes giving you post up gear sites and stuff you fancy being after, nothing better to talk about than gear really fancy a proper gibson LP of some variety (prob a studio) at the moment, getting along with my amp better lately taking a few tone suggestions from online for getting it setup how I want and its worked a treat
Tom 14011
If you have the capacity to save for a Studio you have the capacity to save for a proper one. Don't waste your money, get a proper Les Paul that will last you for life for a few hundred quid more. Don't break your back to buy a LP Studio you will sell in two years. Andrew 4748
pic of the old ones Is that a kahler trem? also, what pups have you put in as they are different to the 1st pic? Carvins are fantastic guitars btw. yeh it is, you might notice theres not locking nut though, things older than I am and its got the scars to prove it, someone converted it to an upside down righty (for some reason) and you can see the filled in hole on the lower horn the pups when I got it were verging on meltdown, standard carvin ones which did sound alright when they were working, liked the coil taps but it was a bit of a gimmick Ive put in some Kent Armstrongs, neck is quite a soft warm PAF style pup, nice clean or with just a bit of gain on it neck is a harder with a much higher ouput, loves gain of any type, better for harder rock and metal guitar itself is an absolute beauty when its fully functional, neck through with a tiny neck, not wide and flat like my KH more like a shallow C all the way up fretboard is ebony with the odd orangey imperfection which I hated at first but love now edit: the reason Ive not named the KA pickups is because I dont remember which they were it was quite a while ago that I switched them Edited August 15, 2010 by Andrew

Yeh I've got a classic which is basically a more 'rock ready' standard. I imagine it's going for the Jimmy Page/Slash kind of look. It used to have a sratchplate which I foolishly removed, lost and now a new one it about £35. Here's mine. The studios are decent enough like. but it all depends what you really want out of it. Mark Knopfler says the plain tops sound better anyway.
Tom 14011
My cousin covering Joe Bonamassa. Very impressive and although there were a few things wrong with it technique wise it's not something a young lad should really worry about unless someone's spent a lot of money on lessons but IIRC you said he was self taught? The most important thing with a song like Django is the style anyway so If I were to give him any advice it would be to play the style and not the composition, i.e it doesn't have to be note perfect. Very expensive guitar for a young lad too! (I was 18 when I got my Les Paul but the same still applies as I was pretty much the only lad who had one at the time amongst friends and peers)

Tom 14011
I'm having myself one of these bad boys on Payday! Good lord! Check it out with both overdrive and distortion on together! Billy Castell 0
This is not a good thread in some ways. I can barely afford bus fare to the city centre! It is an expensive hobby.
Tom 14011
Yes, yes it is! That pedal retails at £70 odd which is expensive but if I sell it two years later I will pick up £60 odd so it's not so bad on recoup, same with most stuff.
