For a man standing alone between Europe and its future, Vaclav Klaus is playing hard to get. Last week a trip to Albania, this week Russia; the Czech president has performed a vanishing act just when he has the rest of Europe dancing to his tune.

 

He relishes being at the centre of a showdown. But it appears he is currently more interested in selling copies of his tract on global warming denial.

 

Last week, as a panicky campaign was launched in Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Stockholm, and Prague to try to force Europe's biggest renegade into line, Klaus was dining by the Adriatic.

 

For five days he refused to return phone calls from Fredrik Reinfeldt, the Swedish prime minister and current EU president saddled with the Klaus emergency. Jan Fischer, the Czech Republic's caretaker prime minister, has an even less enviable task, as mediator between Klaus and the rest of Europe's leaders. But Klaus won't give him the time of day. Fischer admitted he had managed to get him briefly on the phone, but not to arrange a meeting."

 

 

I think it's just him and the Irish now. Two countries stand alone against the tyranny of a Federal Europe.

Irish referendum the other week approved it, so it's just a matter of protocol now.

 

EDIT: But aye, it technically hasn't been ratified in Ireland yet.

They've said if the treaty hasn't been signed then they may - it's a trick as it will be signed by then.

 

The Czech bloke might be within his rights but my reading was that he was being an arse because he likes being the centre of attention rather than out of great principle.

Yup, couldn't get away from it in Dublin if you wanted to. basically every lamppost etc on every street was like this

 

even in the bogs of a bars I was in they had posters up like "We may not be able to explain stage fright....but we can explain the Lisbon treaty!"

Talk of the tories offering a referendum on this is the stuff of nightmares for Cameron. They (the tories) promised this referendum ages ago, but now - with them all but assured of winning the next election -, this is the one thing they are terrified could cause a humungous rift inside the party and cause voters to lose faith with them.
