Harper for England??

He hasn't looked that good since he got the number 1 shirt imo. He also seems to have lost his reflexes as well and now his game as a keeper is more about his positioning than his reflexes. His distribution has got worse as well.

Do you think Capello ever will take the Almunia option?

Isn't Cudicinni also eligible? There is number 1 and 2 with James as 3rd choice.

I think he is, aye. Don't think either will ever play for England though.

Not good enough? :D

Or it's just not cricket?

Oh dear, I guess I'm too old, too long in the tooth, too old fashioned, to even think that foreigners should play for England because their great granny slept around with the occupying troops. To be honest I was a bit uncomfortable with Jamaican born John Barnes wearing an England shirt, and there were others. I'm stuck in the past where English meant England.

As for Harper, if he had not been overshadowed by Given for all these years, and had been our No.1 choice, I'm sure he would have played for England, but now, I think he may have lost what he once probably had and never had a good shot at showing it.

And Green and Robinson in my opinion.

Im not sure why Kirkland doesn't get a shot.

hes way too injury prone, as a keeper thats bad

He has been okay for the past couple of seasons though? (I say - without checking the stats)

Not sure, off the top of my head I don't think he's had any major injuries, just a lot of small niggling injuries (Here are some stats actually. Looks like he's played around 75% of their games in the last couple of years.)

On the subject of Harper, Not sure if I'd actually pick him if I was England manager, it was more the shocking realisation of how poor our goalkeepers are and just how few are first choice in the Premier League - at least Harper is playing regularly.

England don't have a keeper problem that can be solved. James, Green, Foster and Robinson are all great shot stoppers, they're just shit decision makers. You could put any of those 4 in and you'd get the same result imo.

agreed, thing is is there anyone coming through at the moment who is any different? considering keepers best years come later on are any english keepers reputations going to survive long enough (ie the press will crucify them if they make any mistakes) to get that essential experience

While I agree about those 4, if you went down the route a lot of other countries take and called up the 'foreign' Almunia you'd have an all round better keeper in goal. It's not as if the whole team would be non-uk born, it's just one player so I don't see what the big deal is. Spain have Senna, Croatia have Eduardo, Portugal have/had Deco, none of which have any relations from the country they play for.

Yes. Or Cudicini, if he'd play for England

maybe this is the start of what brooking has been banging on about for a few years now - too many foreigners.

if its true then whose fault is that though? the public who demand a quick fix to success from their clubs rather than nurturing local talent? the press? the players themselves?

Barcelona last night had 7 players on the pitch who had come up through their academy
