Renton 22460
There was a transvestite bloke who used to frequent quite a lot of the bars I went to in Newcastle when I was younger (Luckies was one of his favourites), think he might have worked for Northumbria? Fair play to him he didn't give a shit about the stares or what people said/thought. He had hands like shovels, I wouldn't fancy a one on one with him. Fight I mean. Kid Dynamite 7323
Surprised they both got tags and curfews. Thats a typical scene in any town every saturday night
luckyluke 2
Sounds like a premeditated assault (although they were hammered) on a supposedly vulnerable target as opposed to a drunken argument that's got of hand. And regardless, drunken violence and alcohol excess in general is becoming a bigger problem and needs tackling, rather than shrugging off as normal behaviour. Given where you've worked I assume you know this.
Kid Dynamite 7323
Its been a problem for over a decade. Its our culture to drink til you hit the floor and kids are doing it from 13/14 now. I know lads that drink 8 cans before they even leave the house to give them a head start. Taxing the arse off alcohol, upping the drinking age to 21 and regulating off licences selling to minors would sort it out soon enough

tooner 243
didn't the drinking hours get extended recently (relatively), I've only been over once when I was 17 and I remember all the pubs closed at 11 or something like that.....if i am correct in my first sentence, has this had an adverse effect on the frequency of booze fueled misadventures in Britain? Frightening stuff. No but il have a look at it. I know im probably the wrong person to talk to about drinking but its getting to the point where I rarely stay out past midnight now because I just feel uncomfortable being the only sober one in the building. My sister is over in Oz at the minute and the social scene over there revolves around BBQs at peoples houses or a few drinks at the local. It used to be the same here 20 years ago

It used to be the same here 20 years ago That's a bit of a sweeping statement like, it's not like that everywhere. Granted, the more out of the big town places were a lot more laid back, but there were plenty of places I went to over there where areas of the town or city centres were rammed with people absolutely off thier faces. There was absolutely no difference between what you see here and there. Cairns was a bit loopy but it already has a reputation. The place I noticed it most was Brisbane though. I was stopping in the west end of the city, and to get from there to the city centre you had to walk over a big long bridge accross the river. It brings you out right next to a big old building which is actually a casino. It's right at the top of the main shopping street aswell. From the end of the bridge to the bottom of the main shopping street on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday, you could easily have been in any town or city centre over here. That was just people falling into the scran establishments aswell, there were other bits in Brisbane that were the same. Kevin Carr's Gloves 4089
Funny as fuck. I would pay an extra quid a month tax to have crews of cage fighters dressed as transvestites roam city centres at night just to batter the fuck out of arseholes. Guest alex
I thought the drinking culture in Australia was pretty much the same as over here. The only reason they have barbies all the time is because of the weather. If anything they're bigger pissheads than us tbh.
trophyshy 7099
My aussie mates, who all love to smash it hard, are astonished at the drinking culture in London. The only place I have seen outside of the UK with a staggering, vomitting maelstrom of pissheads is Christchurch New Zealand. A town with more brothels than churches, incidentally. Having said that I am invariably pissed myself so make of that what you will. Edited October 9, 2009 by trophyshy
Guest alex
I think the weird thing about the UK is the drink problem, which isn't unique exactly, plus the ease with which you can buy the stuff combine with how ridiculously cheap it is. I.e. 1ltr bottles of vodka for well under a tenner.

Aye that was a masterstroke, extending the hours you could buy alcohol to reduce the problems of excess drinking. I think the theory was it would stagger the times people came out of clubs (rather than all at once) thus reducing drunken violence like the story mention above. It hasn't worked, and now you can buy your special brew from 24hrs a day from some supermarkets.
Billy Castell 0
It's the supermarkets that are the biggest cause of the problems. The booze is so cheap, and there is such a range that people can easily pay £15 and then lose the ability to walk and piss themselves. I've only had one 'fear and loathing' nightwith alcohol and that was enough. I could barely walk up the stairs to my flat, and I think I was using my forehead as an extra leg to help me up at one point in that epic journey. I don't see why people do it all the time, as you make yourself look like a right twat to the sober people working at the kebab shop. Doesn't Newcastle have a reputation for being mental on Saturday nights?
