Barney 0
Boardroom influence over transfers at St James’ Park precedes Ashley. Sir Bobby Robson used to complain that a certain agent was effectively “chief scout” at Newcastle and both he and Graeme Souness went along with the odd signing they did not particularly want; I know that, because they told me at the time. Sir Bobby was too loyal to air his grievances but, ultimately, it did neither man any good. There is so much wrong with that scenario, that it makes me twitch. Bobby wanted us to sign Carrick (for £3million at the time), but Shepherd preferred Nicky Butt. Bobby didn't want Carr either.

Wasn't the story that Shepherd wouldn't pay what West Ham were looking because he thought Carrick would only want to come to us and force WH to drop their asking price?
