The Fish 11080 Posted October 6, 2009 Share Posted October 6, 2009 (edited) Makes me laugh, it works out that I save more/spend less money if I travel up on the weekend before Xmas and then again over that weekend, than it would if I simply stayed up in North for those extra couple of days... four journeys have cost me £76 instead of the usual £80 for two. I can never wrap my head around the price of UK train travel. It's a not a great service, it's not a great distance, but christ is a huge fee. It's a crap-shoot if you manage to get the right tickets at the right time, for example? my train up is costing me £15, the return is 200% more expensive... how does that work? I get that some trains are going to be busier, but how can one day be 200% more expensive and following that a later jounrey at a more popular time to travel is again £15... I miss Italian trains. More or Less did some statistical analysis on it. It used to be a standard price so everyone knew the cost in advance first come first served, but privatisation means each seat is sold for it's true value. There's whole sets of formulae for the number of seats on a train or plane and the price of each seat in relation to others given the journey date/time, the number of seats remaining at that time and that. I'm sure the trains around the Xmas weekend will be in greater demand than those the weekend before, so why would they be cheaper?
