Monkeys Fist 43579
Yes, except they're called Fells. Yes you can call them that if it makes you really angry to call them hills/mountains/results of orogenesis, personally it's more a matter of perspective. No anger, just the accepted term. The Fell and Rock Club Wainwright's Guides to the Lakeland Fells Fell Running etc Hey Ho where you been lately Foppy? I'd think it would be rough as fuck being out on the drink in the centre but (according to the Lonely Planet Lakes book at least) it's meant to have some really nice restaurants. Renton 22391
Tomorrow's going to be a glorious day for fell walking btw. Was thinking that when I saw the weather last night actually. I'm planning a dash to Blencathra tomorrow if you fancy it. The scary way or the easier way? Sharp edge on ascent or nothing. Probably descend down Hall's fell. Other than that it doesn't seem to be a particularly interesting fell to me (never done it before mind). Ideally I'd like to combine it with Skiddaw, but want to get back in time to watch the match. Which way are you doing Sca fell CT, or do you mean Scafell pike? I did Scafell pike 2 years ago from Seathwaite on a glorious spring day. Seriously couldn't believe how easy it was. There were literally hundreds on it that day. My only caution would be it must be a nightmare to navigate in poor visibility.

Once you've done Sharp Edge, there's not alot too it.Down Halls fell is the best bet then pint/home. Skiddaw is a dull heap.

Renton 22391
Sharpe edge... Doesnt look as bad from here But from here looks like sheer death. The view on the top one is canny nice like. I'm getting increasingly into scrambling, makes walking a bit more exciting. From what I know of Sharp edge its an easy scramble, of course a slip could be lethal but that's half the fun. There's some really challenging scrambles in Scotland I'm planning, going to do a professional course on it first though, to give me some confidence. Funny thing is I'm scared shitless of heights, although this type of thing very quickly desensitises you to it. Once Striding Edge was frightening for me, its not an issue any more, seems odd seeing people practically crag fast on it.
Monkeys Fist 43579
Renton, you should try Dungeon Ghyll and Jacks Rake (on Pavey Ark crag). The ghyll is a decent wee romp, go up the ghyll then cross over to Sprinkling Tarn. The cliff at the back of the tarn can be climbed diagonally (btm right to top left) by a "path" called Jacks Rake. The ghyll is 5 minutes from the car park at New Dungeon Ghyll pub in Langdale. The whole thing can be done in a 1/2 day. I love scrambling, adds a little extra to walks. Renton 22391
Well, as the met office predicted, the weather was superb on Saturday (and utterly shit today). Got to Blencathra later than planned, so rushed up Sharp edge, traversed the ridge, and got back to Threlkeld in less than 4 hours, rushed to Carlisle, shower, then watched us get humped in some shitty pub. Never mind. Sharp edge doesn't deserve its reputation imo, technically its very easy and the exposure isn't too bad. Having said that, the rock is polished after so many ascents and I can imagine it being very dangerous when wet. Some pics: Going up. Coming down (Keswick in background). Did Crib Goch on the way up to Snowdon this year, which was much worse. Finally, one of the Ring of Steall, the Mamores, Scotland. My favourite ever walk (taken last year). Edit: not sure why these have come out as thumbnails, have I exceeded the limit or something? Not sure how to reduce these to an acceptable size. Monkeys Fist 43579
Great pics Renton. Crib Goch is a classic, have you done Tryfan in the next valley along? It's a beaut. Pick your own route but the best follows the obvious ridge. Edited October 18, 2009 by Monkeys Fist
