I know what my job pays in the US and i know what i'm paid in the EU. 90k is not a great place to be when it comes to health insurance, education etc. Its not poverty by any means of course but its not great. The national average in the states is $35,000, 90k doesn't sound too bad... All that says to me is that there's a lot of people on the bread line. Don't they argue that the middle-income families are totally screwed by the system in America? Earn too much to benefit from government health and education systems, but not enough to pay for private firms to supply a decent standard? Guess who had the better results! You should read Steven Levitt's take on the reasons for the reduction in US crime during the period you are referring to. I think he uses NYC as an example too. They might save a bob or two on clothes and cars, but the amount you'd have to spend on healthcare alone, would put me off living there on a modest income. Think of it, over there a modest income earner must be shitting himself that if he slips on ice and needs lengthy expensive treatment that isn't covered by his insurance company, his family is pretty much fucked. Over here if the house hold is pulling in a couple of ok salaries you can afford a few luxuries, a holiday now and then and if tragedy strikes, you've paid a comparative pittance to get excellent health care regardless of the cause. I'd be curious to see if there's a formula that takes into account exchange rate, cost of living, ancilliary costs and the like. I've never had any problems in the US even in the likes of New Orleans. You are more likely to get in trouble in the Town than on a night out in the States. Generally, I'd say the cost of living is higher in the States than in the UK but you get more for your money. Just been reading Homicide by David Simon and (admittedly in the late 80s) it was about $30k for detectives at the top of their scale (who hadn't became sergeant or whatever) iirc so it was based on that. I bet LA is better funded than Baltimore though (just a bit). I don't think I'd do it for $90k though. It's not that much tbh. The UK equivalent is £34k after 10 years service edit - just noticed that after probation the starting salary for a PC is £27500!!! Thats getting on for £35k after enhancements and overtime.
