Happy Face 29
I'm not a big fan of Beckford. Especially seeing as he is 26! But signing for us and playing in a better team next season ( if we get better players ) could step up his game. How is it desirable to hope a good team will improve a players game rather than buying a player who's good enough to improve the team? Your argument seems particularly unbalanced though, dependent as it is on building a better team in the first place to help him improve. Why not just buy the better players and leave Beckford alone? Personally, I think Beckford is as good as any of our strikers.
JaMoUsE 0
Newcastle United have submitted a third and final bid of £1.5million for Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford. The Tyneside club have made a last attempt to meet United's valuation after failing with two previous bids to prise Beckford away from Elland Road. Leeds have not commented on Newcastle's latest offer but it is anticipated that the board at Elland Road will once again reject it. Newcastle approached Leeds before Christmas with bids of £1m and £1.25m – fees which were turned down outright by United – and a further offer made this week was a last-ditch effort to persuade United to part company their 20-goal striker. Leeds have no interest in selling Beckford for less than their asking price – thought to be in the region of £2million – despite the fact that the forward's contract will expire at the end of this season. Newcastle have tested United's resolution repeatedly during the last month but should their latest bid prove unsuccessful, the Championship leaders are likely to take their search for a new forward elsewhere. Newcastle's board are understood to have set £1.5m as the maximum fee they were willing to pay for Beckford and will not return to Leeds for a fourth time. Beckford stands to treble his wages by transferring to St James' Park but Leeds manager Simon Grayson warned after the club's FA Cup victory at Old Trafford on Sunday that his club would not bow to a cut-price deal. "He's got five goals in his last three games and strikers are a big commodity," Grayson said. "If we do let him go then it won't be on the cheap, that's for sure." Regardless of the size of Newcastle's offer, Leeds would only move to agree a deal once Grayson had lined up a suitable replacement. United's manager is rumoured to be interested in Billy Sharp but is likely to be priced out of a January move with Sheffield United set to demand £2million for the striker. Leeds are believed to consider that valuation excessive. Scunthorpe United's Gary Hooper – a player who scored 30 goals in League One last season – has also been linked to Elland Road, but Leeds still favour the option of retaining Beckford until the end of the season. Newcastle are not the only club interested in recruiting him. Bolton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion are among a number of other sides with an eye on Beckford, and Newcastle's bids may be the first of many received by Leeds during the transfer window

The Fish 10972
Moaning is a very Yorkshire-y past time. I'd rather we spent £1.5m on a midfielder who can actually create, or a striker who has proven himself at this level (Beattie) but I'm fully aware that Beckford provides an obvious solution to an obvious problem. Our total lack of pace up front means our only winning strategy is to hammer teams into submission with brute strength. This works 8 times out of ten, but we've come undone against big strong organised defences. Unfortunately unless we loan a promising youngster like a Gosling or a Delfuonso (sp?) we wont get that, so Beckford may not be Mr Right, but he is Mr Right Now. ewerk 31221
The ticket money for the away cup ties at OT and WHL, along with TV money for the Man U game will have strengthened Leeds' hand somewhat.
snakehips 0
Handing in a transfer request waives the right to 10% of the transfer fee = £150k. This act could well have been 'asked' by Leeds in a way for them to accept NUFC's offer and to get as much dosh as possible, not to mention letting them accept a bid and blame it all on the player 'He wanted to go. Don't want unhappy players at the club. Only want players who want to play for the football club ( )etc etc'. This could indicate a deal being done this week. Not necessarily to NUFC, btw. JaMoUsE 0
he will have probably handed in a transfer request because the £1.5m offer was most probably turned down no he handed in his transfer request ages ago. Leeds United can confirm that Jermaine Beckford has handed in a transfer request. The transfer request was handed in on December 30. "By handing in a transfer request it clearly indicates that the player wants to leave Leeds United. "However, that will only be allowed to happen in the event that it is decided to be in the best interests of Leeds United. "The best interests of Leeds United involve receiving both an acceptable transfer fee and securing a suitable replacement to ensure his departure does not have an adverse effect on the club's overall aim of securing promotion back to the Coca-Cola Championship." This works 8 times out of ten, but we've come undone against big strong organised defences. From what I've heard Beckford is a player that needs chances to score goals. Chances do not come easily at Newcastle, even in the Championship. Once we're in the Premier League they'll be at a premium. What we need as you say is some midfielders who can create chances. Particularly we're lacking this down the right. If you look at the Newcastle teams on the 90s and early 2000s we had players in our midfield with pace who could create or score themselves. Strikers might score goals but there's few out there who create them. Beckford isn't a creator. We can fill our side with as many goal scoring forwards as we like, but if there's noone to create goals then they're not going to score. Ranger and Lovenkrands are both reasonably pacy, should force Beckford to have a showdown with them before we even consider buying him. From standstill running 20 yards, timing your run to meet a Jonas Gutierrez cross, and running with the ball for 30-40 yards. If he doesn't come out considerably ahead of Lovenkrands and Ranger then there's no point. The 1.5 million would be better spent on some pace and creativity in midfield so that I don't have to see Danny Guthrie miss-employed on the right side of midfield ever again. Craig 6700
So a player wants to leave his club, our manager wants to sign him, his club want £2m but we're not going a penny over £1.5m?? Comes to something when our owner won't cough up 20% of the fee that was recouped 6 months ago for the player Beckford would be ultimately replacing (Martins). The player in question isn't the point I'm trying to make tbh - more the principle that he's recouped a fucking shitload in nearly 3 years and is then being a tight-arse over the same sum of £500K. If the two clubs valuations were light years apart then I could understand him telling them to fuck off but over that?

If the two clubs valuations were light years apart then I could understand him telling them to fuck off but over that? Fair point well made. If Hughton has decided that Beckford is a player he wants and Ashley won't front up with an extra half mill to help bring him in that's piss-poor considering the amount that has been made on outgoing transfers in recent times. This is regardless of whether we think Beckford is worth that sort of money. I think thougj, that Hughton is looking at Beckford as an opportunity signing. Not someone he wants at all costs, but someone he'll take a chance on if the price is right. Holding true to our valuation of the player in this case is fair enough. We'd all love it if Ashley was to reinvest even half of the money made from the sales of Milner, N'Zogbia, Duff, Given and Martins. That'd be 6 (Milner) + 3 (N'Zogbia) + 1.5 (Duff) + 3 (Given) + 4.5 (Martins) = 18 million pounds. That amount isn;t even taking into account the money saved on wages over the 6 months that we've not had them. That'd be enough to flat out ensure that we gain promotion to the Premier League, and would give us a decent shot of having a squad that could finish midtable in the top tier, all whilst being on much lower wages that we were with a team that was relegated (albeit in extenuating circumstances). Craig 6700
Aye but don't forget (as Decka keeps reminding us) that not being in the Premiership brings financial losses that the club had not reckoned for....
