Regardless of all this he can finish as good as any striker outside the top 4 of the Premier League and has superb off ball movement. Simon Cox signed for West Brom for £1.5 in the summer from League 1 Swindon, last season Jermain Beckford played 12 less league games than him and netted 26 goals to Simon Cox's 29. This should give you a pretty clear indication of why Jermaine Beckfords value is considerably more than £1.5m. I have watched the guy play at Wealdstone, Scunthorpe and Leeds and was asked to track him 2 years ago for a now Premier League club. So any concerns as to wether the lad can cut in the Championship are highly unjustified however with regards to those concerns in the top flight I can almost assure you Jermaine would be inadeqaute. The major question for Newcastle at the moment, is he worth £30,000 a week ? I fully expect Jermaine Beckford to be starting next years Championship season in a Leeds United shirt. Deon Burton played for Sheff Weds in the Championship and couldnt hit barn door man. He now has dropped down a division and is scoring for fun ala Beckford. Beckford is playing in the best team in the League by far and he gets a hat full of chances per game, of course he is going to score goals against fucking SHITE! Youll see when we step upto Prem. Or, why didnt we go after Lambert at the end of last season instead of letting him goto Saints? Surley he would be a better choice? Once we're within 6 months of the expiry of his current contract can't we just agree a pre-contract, thereby removing any threat of an auction during the January window. All that would be left is to agree a fee with Leeds for agreeing to us having him for the rest of the season. Offer them £500k for the benefit of not having a want-away player in the dressing room for the rest of the season. Beckford boasts wonderful acceleration, but that jaw-dropping change of pace is often undermined by a tendency to snatch at chances, a seemingly cloudy understanding of the offside law and the suspicion that his feet are quicker than his brain. He is playing in a team that creates bags of openings – after all, if you are a striker receiving service from a wide man as good as Robert Snodgrass, you will be unlikely to go hungry – but still misses a fair percentage of them. Granted, as we saw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, Beckford scores some vital and stellar goals but how would he fare in a struggling Premier League side, say, who conjure few chances? A Hull City or a Bolton perhaps? His most likely destination this month still looks to be Newcastle United. With Chris Hughton's forwards also enjoying – and missing – a reasonable amount of openings, Beckford might do OK, and his pace would certainly help a team which, collectively, remains somewhat slow. But, even so, would it not be a risk to sever ties with Simon Grayson, the bright young Leeds manager under whom he has blossomed? Newcastle fans who watched Beckford spurn the chance of a hat-trick for Leeds in a pre-season friendly at St James' Park were impressed by his pace - but not much else. The player who caught the eye that night was the midfielder Fabian Delph, who later swapped Leeds for Aston Villa. Delph was fabulous, spraying glorious passes, long and short, all over the pitch and completely outwitting Joey Barton before enduring a couple of unpleasant, unpunished body checks from Newcastle's enfant terrible. At 26, Beckford has some important decisions to make. He has only been a full-time professional for three seasons and the striker who joined Leeds for £45,000 from non-league Wealdstone remains far from the finished article. The temptation – and his agent will surely be advising him this way – is to cash in now and land the most lucrative move possible. Sometimes, though, money really is not everything. Surely it is better to remain a hero with Leeds at League One and Championship level rather than proving a soon to be forgotten flop with a toiling Premier League side. He is out of contract in the summer and can leave for nothing so Leeds will definitely sell if a new deal is not agreed. Beckford, though, should sign on the dotted line. The Newcastle striker cannot, at least when fit, stop scoring at Championship level, but even his biggest fan would say the Geordie-Nigerian struggled in the Premier League.
