Having lived in the staes most of my life and read a fair bit of American lit like Steinbeck I think F. Scott does have more in common with DIckens and I think Oliver Twist is a good example. F.Scott wrote the Great Gatsby in the early 1920s (22?) in America which was not yet in a great depression and socio-economincally speaking was simialr to the Victorian era. It was not until the depression that you had the spate of plays and novels that depict the American Dream gone wrong (post 1929)." It's not true about Dickens - my contemporaries are Robert Graves, my lecturer & tutor Robert Reuel and CS of course......................... And as for the comparison between Jay Gatsby and Bill Sykes I mean, come on. I would also disagree regarding the similarities between Victorian London and 1920's America since any economic wealth of the Victorian age was pretty much restricted to a small, privileged minority whereas in the roaring 20's the 'man on the street' was able to buy stocks and shares allowing working class people to become upwardly mobile through their own enterprise. I'm not quite sure what having read a lot of Steinbeck would have to with novel in question either although I can certainly see more similarities between his work and that of Dickens.
