of the county variety. If Durham win this match they win the league with 2 games spare. Coetzers just gone for 107 and Di Venuto is on 194 not out. 330-1

Looking nailed on if the weather stays good.

Its about the only thing CLS is good for these days

Just need a draw don't they? As they've already got enough batting points. Notts are second too which just shows how far they are ahead of the rest.

Here's the points system (from wiki - just checked):

The county championship works on a points system, the winner being the team with most points in the first division. The points are awarded as follows:

Win: 14 points + bonus points.

Tie: 7 points + bonus points.

Draw: 4 points + bonus points.

Loss: Bonus points.

Bonus points are collected for batting and bowling. These points can only be obtained from the first 120 overs of each team's first innings. The bonus points are retained regardless of the outcome of the match.

Batting

200-249 runs: 1 point

250-299 runs: 2 points

300-349 runs: 3 points

350-399 runs: 4 points

400+ runs: 5 points

Bowling

3-5 wickets taken: 1 point

6-8 wickets taken: 2 points

9-10 wickets taken: 3 points

Durham only need 11 points to secure victory in the county championship and they've already got 4 batting points. A draw will give them 4 more. It's done and dusted basically barring an incredible turn around as they'll get one more batting point in this innings plus the odd bowling point and batting points in their 2nd innings if they bat again. 5Live reckoned they didn't need any more points but it would appear you're right and they need 2 bowling points (as at least a draw is nailed on).

Bonus points only apply to the first innings. Looks like they're likely to get the full five for batting (a 314 opening partnership will often do that for you) and I doubt they'll get fewer than six wickets with GBH and Plunkett playing. I reckon they'll win this quite comfortably so bonus points shouldn't be of too much importance.

Ah right, makes sense I suppose as you can therefore only get a maximum of 5 in the match and stops manufacturing of results (well, not results but situations in order to get extra points).

Only slight worry I have about Durham having all these stars (i.e. overseas players in particular) is the impact on the development of younnger players like Ben Harmison, who was starting to look the part but is now no.14 in the pecking order unlike last year where he was playing quite a bit. Can't complain about the results on the pitch mind.

We dont have that many overseas stars. The league was practically won by the time Chanderpaul started playing. And our best performers this year, Onions, Harmison and Blackwell are all English, along with Claydon who is on a British passport.

Chanderpaul was who I was on about in particular as they didn't need him at all. But Claydon's still an Aussie, even if they get around that by his holding a UK passport. They've got a canny few others on their books too. It's a trend in cricket in general over here though what with 'Colpac' players taking advantage on EU passports etc. It was a minor criticism, like I said.

Off to Lords tomorrow for the ODI. Can't wait.

Mark Butcher was in my hotel bar last night in Leeds. He was good craic, had a few drinks with him reminissing about his 173* against the Aussies. Paul Allot (I think that's his name) the presenter fella, nicked my toast out of the communal toaster at breakfast today too :)
