Fop 1
I don't really see much wrong with the police being armed tbh (granted they've been properly checked not to be loopers). You'll get a lot less arguments from average criminals armed with knives and bottles if someone produces a bit of firepower Well NI is an exception for obvious reasons, but surely people would rather the NI police could become more like the general British police, rather than the British police becoming more like the NI police? There's the argument that if you arm police you state an arms race, not sure how valid it is, but it certainly changes the perception of police and the police's perception of the public. Fact is there's plenty of police that shouldn't have access to guns, just like there's plenty general people (Fop was going to call them civilians, which just goes to show how the police force is being perceived). Look at how US police routinely treat people, that is becoming more and more common in the UK police, but only a decade ago it was much less common (outside of specific instances like football matches - an even there if there was no violence). They bring a knife, you bring a gun, they send one of yours to the hospital, you send one of theirs to the Morgue We start carrying semi-automatics, they buy automatics. We start wearing Kevlar, they buy armor-piercing rounds. And? And *you're* wearing a mask and jumping off rooftops. Now, take this guy: armed robbery, double homicide. Got a taste for theatrical, like you. Leaves a calling card...
Fop 1
To be honest I don't see a problem with it so long as it's regulated. They seem to be tasering people for fun at the moment. That's the exact problem, tazers were supposed to be a firearm alternative, but already they are being used as general all purpose tool now (not the only example either their pepper spray was originally intended only to be used in very specific circumstances). In the 70's someone was shot and killed by the British police it was a massive deal, these days it might not even make national news.

Doing away with the odd fox, pigeon or warding off angry ex clients?
