A brace by Luis Fabiano in Rosario helped Dunga's men become the first South American team to book a berth in the finals in South Africa next summer.

Unmarked Luisao opened the scoring in the 24th minute and Sevilla striker Fabiano widened the gap six minutes later, as he captured a lost ball after Argentina goalkeeper Mariano Andujar failed to save a Maicon shot.

Jesus Datolo reduced the deficit 20 minutes into the second half with a left-foot shot from distance, but Fabiano secured the victory by finishing a counter-attack two minutes later.

Brazil, who reached the 30-point mark, became the seventh team to secure a World Cup spot, alongside hosts South Africa, Holland, North Korea, South Korea, Australia and Japan.

Brazil coach Dunga said: "Argentina used their skills, their talent, but Brazil were focused and paid attention. We knew to play with speed in the right moments."

It was only Argentina's second-ever home defeat in World Cup qualifying and they are hanging on to fourth place in the table - the last automatic qualifying spot.

Chile remain second in the standings on 27 points, although only goal difference keeps them above Paraguay.

Marcelo Bielsa's Chile only gained a 2-2 draw in their home match against Venezuela. Arturo Vidal put Chile ahead early in the 10th minute with a header after a Matias Fernandez corner.

Even though Giancarlo Maldonado equalised at the 34th and Jose Manuel Rey gave the Vinotinto the lead nine minutes later, Rodrigo Millar came off the bench to level the match at the Estadio Monumental in Santiago.

In Asuncion, a penalty by Salvador Cabanas late in the first half gave Paraguay a 1-0 win over Bolivia.

Carlos Bonet was fouled inside the box and Salvador Cabanas shot close to the left post to Bolivia keeper Hugo Suarez in the last minute of the first half.

Paraguay stay third while the Bolivians remain ninth on 12 points.

Uruguay went down from fifth to seventh and their boss Oscar Tabarez was very unhappy with the result.

"Tension and nerves for winning the game made us make big mistakes. They make the players feel tired in the second half and we didn't play the match the way we expected," he said.

Christ Veron, I thought he was dead (or retired). Nontheless, people are over reacting to Argentinas poor form, they're still in an automatic spot for qualification never mind the playoff spot which will be against the mighty New Zealand so they will qualify, no doubt about that if you ask me.

All of that is incorrect. New Zealand play their play off with the 5th placed Asian team.

They would actually play Mexico I think

possibly...Costa Rica at the moment....Honduras top, but its very tight.

The top 4 teams qualify for the FIFA World Cup™. The 5th placed team enters a home-and-away playoff with the 4th placed team from North,Central America & Caribbean.

You're right!

As an Aussie, the play-off for Oceania was against a CONMEBOL team (usually the reason why we never made it the World Cup). Then it all changed when we became past of the Asian confederation.

Then it changed again when it was decided that Oceania would play off against the 5th-running Asian team.

Maradona or not, Argentina will most likely smoke whoever comes out of our group.

Costa Rica looked good until they were beaten at (their horribly shitty and artifically turfed) home by Mexico over the weekend and Mexico got a bad rap early on until everyone realized their shite record was more due to them having a ton of away games early than having a shite coach. Between the two, I can't see Mexico suddenly backsliding to the point where they'd play Argentina. Costa Rica look to be in something of a freefall though and could end up facing Argentina. Can't see them winning.

US is the US. We beat Spain and go up 2-0 on Brazil in the Confed Cup Final only to get flat out embarrased at Azteca a couple weeks later. If Bob keeps Jozy and Davies up front and with Gooch back in the XI, we ought to handle T&T tomorrow. Thing is, do you risk injuries to important personnel when the much tougher test (and probably more important and timely) is Honduras at Honduras next month? The good news is our last game is against the faltering Costa Rica at home. Again, totally possible, but unlikely we'd face Argentina.

Honduras has played over their heads in this tournament. Seems like everyone keeps expecting them to remember they've only qualified once, but they keep on playing well. Soft as a pillow though. If the officiating isn't "accomodating", I can't see them getting past Argentina.

Such a tight race though, anyone could end up in that playoff. Just can't imagine anyone but the U.S. or Mexico actually beating them.
