Monaco's Gakpe makes Togo switch

Monaco midfielder Serge Gakpe

Serge Gakpe has decided he wants to play international football for Togo

Monaco's Serge Gakpe is the latest former French under-21 player seeking to take advantage of a change in Fifa regulations.

The midfielder could play for Togo next month in a 2010 World Cup qualifier against Morocco.

"I spoke to Emmanuel Adebayor and made my decision after that," he said.

He said he made his decision because Togo are a good team with a chance to qualify for next year's World Cup and African Cup of Nations finals.

French-born Gakpe qualifies to play for Togo because he has dual nationality but before the Fifa Congress in May would not have been allowed to make the switch because he was over 21.

However a vote at the Congress of world football's ruling body in the Bahamas eliminated the age restriction, allowing several players to since change their footballing nationalities.

They include Tottenham Hotspur defender Stephane Bassong, who made his debut for Cameroon on 11 August.

Lazio midfielder Mourad Meghni is also French-born but is now playing for Algeria, after winning a first cap in a friendly against Uruguay this month.

Valenciennes striker Mamadou Samassa also has a case pending with Fifa in order to get clearance to play for Mali.

All three had previously been capped by France at under-21 level.

Aye, why should it have anything to do about where you were born?

Stevie is registering for Banque de Gaia first 11.

The running joke with a couple of mates is, let migrate to American Samoa and become international footballers. Ranked equal 203rd in the world, it shouldn't be to hard to make the starting 11!
