Happy Face 29
Freedom of Information requests revealed that one PC in London earned more than £90,000, more than double the maximum ordinary salary of £42,000 and £15,000 more than a chief superintendent. More than 12,000 constables in 35 out of the 51 forces in England, Scotland and Wales claimed more than £6,000 in overtime. And nearly 500 claimed more than £15,000 for extra hours worked, The Independent newspaper reported. Police 'earning up to £52,000-a-year overtime' The total overtime bill for the 43 English and Welsh forces is thought to be about £485 million a year. Keith Vaz, the chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, said the committee would look into the level of overtime, saying it raised issues about long working hours. "My overriding concern is with the safety of allowing police officers to work such a vast amount of overtime," he said. "Police officers need to be alert and I do not believe that an officer working enough hours to warrant an almost doubling of their salary can be properly effective. "The use of overtime within the police force can be beneficial and cost effective when considering the wider financial impact of employing and training new officers. "Yet, there is a definite limit to which overtime should be relied upon. Those forces in which the use of overtime is extensive should seek to increase their recruitment numbers." Simon Reed, the vice chairman of the Police Federation, the body which represents Britain's police constables, said overtime could be "quite an efficient way of fulfilling shortfalls in resources". "There are some officers who do very little, but clearly there are others who are doing quite a lot. When you get officers doing excessive amounts of overtime, it suggests to me that the department is understaffed," he said. "People will no doubt think that these figures make officers look greedy, but you will probably find that in many cases the officers are being directed to do this and may not actually want to. Rather than volunteering, they are being coerced by their line managers." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics...h-overtime.html
Guest alex
Read about this the other day. Can't imagine why so many end up getting divorced. Then they have to work even more overtime.

ChezGiven 0
I'm surprised Ferp hasnt started a thread on the abuse of section 44 stop and searches. 2,300 children under the age of 10 were stopped and searched under anti-terror laws last year. Am not one to get arsed about these things too much but that is a fucking liberty. If you'll excuse the pun. http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/au...search-children

Posting in an anti-police thread, like Chris's here, is the the ultimate in being arsed. As has been clearly stated many, many, many times on here. So you're against the beating up of innocent women now? But it was only ONE police officer that doubled their pay, surely that would be tarring all police for the actions of one, single, individual?
