Player Rating

You used to be able to get roughly sensible player ratings from most of the papers when we were in the Premiership, but I can't find any rating thing for the Championship... well not one that's based on anything other than the fervent frothing of Sky fans.

any suggestions?

You sure about that?

Closer to reality than the Sky.com ratings and that's fer damned sure.

Not sure how you can say that when they differ so widely from paper to paper. Oliver's were the best though. 8s and 9s if you won 5s and 6s if you lost. I think it might have been Wullie who pointed out that one season he gave Speed at least a 7 and usually an 8 or 9, i.e. world player of the year form.

Speed was good, just not that good....

Can't beleive anyone would take anything Alan Oliver had to say at anything like face value....

With a face like that....

I guess I agreed with the ratings in the broadsheets and so found them reasonable.

It's for a spreadsheet I cooked up, to try and chart our best performers. That's why I asked on here after the Reading game why there hadn't been the normal player rating part of the match thread. I figured I could get an approximation from here, but it was not to be.

I'm not even sure half the people who write about us even see the full match all the time. I don't know why you'd want to compile the thoughts of someone else using a system as abitrary as marks out of ten to see who's had the best season.

Sorry, that wasn't much help, was it? The Journal mebbies? :icon_lol:

That is quite common. You tend to remember the good things players do when we win and the bad things players do when we lose. Regardless (generally) of performances.

Does the Journal not subscribe to Alan Olivers school of rating?

Of course there's no way to get an flawless rating, but I was hoping for something close to reasonable.

Oliver's were ridiculous though. It's a bit more tempered elsewhere normally. You don't often see virtually the whole team getting 8s and 9s from a more neutral reporter.

:icon_lol: Funnily enough I was just thinking about that. Not even sure if he got on in that game as he had well and truly fallen out with Souness by then. Those duds were minging.

Souness always got glowing reports from Oliver as Souey knoew how to play the game and with him.

Until they fell out that is. Also, Oliver and Roeder were proper bum chums iirc.

I think I remember Souness speaking about it a great deal when he finished up. Always harping on about keeping the local press on your side or else they'll hound you out.

Was it KK or Sam who didn't give Oliver any time?

I think they were. I certainly can't remember anything too critical of Roeder written by Oliver.

Some might say Oliver's ratings were...wide of the mark :icon_lol::):razz::icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:
