With Duff gone, there's only 7 players left who are ...

on £50k per week or more.

Geremi/Butt/Nolan - £50k

Smith/Colo/Gutierrez/Barton £60k

Buying NUFC must be much more attactive to potential suitors now.

If the unwritten rule about wages not being more than 70% of turnover is right, then it is just about sorted.

Est turnover this coming season is around £50m and 70% is £35m which is what the current wage bill is or thereabouts.

Can't see many more players being offloaded now unless they are desperate to go and there won't be any given the wages they are on.

I highly doubt Jonas is on more than 30k. I don't want to lose anymore players but if we must i'd rather see the likes of Geremi gone.

I'm hoping that little cameo yesterday was a way of reminding the world that Geremi is alive and well.

I don't think he's that bad a player and would be useful as a squad player of we had numbers but its probably better now to lose him and get someone cheaper/younger if possible.

I think the likes of Geremi are just happy to sit back and get their pay cheque without playing. We want players who give 110%, you could see the ones yesterday who were doing that.

Possibly but I think when he has played he hasn't been indifferent - I know his legs have gone but he can still sometimes do a job imo.

He could be useful getting crosses into the box for Shola and Carroll IMO. Probably the least mobile player we have in the side though.

Toon owner wants big money players out

By MARTIN HARDY, 16/08/2009

NEWCASTLE owner Mike Ashley is ready to launch a further cull of the club's playing staff.

Ashley has already cut the Toon's annual salary bill from £74million to £48m since relegation.

But the top brass want a further £20m reduction and that will mean more big-name departures.

Damien Duff's expected £4m move to Fulham will mean EIGHT first-teamers have left since June 1.

But Ashley wants more big earners out.

Argentine defender Fabricio Coloccini is being lined up for a move to Serie A with Palermo.

West Ham and Wolves have targeted 20-year-old striker Andy Carroll, with the Magpies knocking back a £2.5m bid.

Attacker Jonas Gutierrez could move to Greece, while defender Steven Taylor and keeper Tim Krul may be sacrificed to cut costs.

Cheap Ashley has told acting boss Chris Hughton that he will have to rely on youngsters, loan signings and cheap deals to plug the gaps.

Newcastle had only 16 fit players from their own books with pro-level experience to call on for yesterday's clash with Reading.

The Toon have held talks with free agent Peter Lovenkrands about a possible return.

The Danish striker scored three times after joining in January but was not offered a permanent deal when the season ended.

But Newcastle have since lost forwards Mark Viduka, Michael Owen and Oba Martins and Lovenkrands is keen on a return after spending the summer training with old club Rangers.

Talks with former Leeds boss David O'Leary about taking over the hotseat if Ashley fails to sell the club broke down on Thursday.

It is expected that there will now be no managerial appointment until local businessman Barry Moat has been given time to prove his consortium has the funds for a takeover.

How much is Krul going to be on? There's absolutely no reason to sell him that I can immediately think of.

Unless you're a fat cunt intent on the complete destruction of NUFC of course!

I agree, it would be a stupid sale on every level, si i expect theres a big chance it will happen.

I should have probably added that I can see why he'd do it in terms of profiting from him but if he reckons we can get out of this league, Krul is the type of player we need to keep. Then again, Ashley probably reckons he can recoup a load of money and get promoted on the bare minimum anyway.

He'll probably be convinced of that by now.

Shouldn't have let Lovenkrands go in the first place, he would've done a job in this division for sure. If we keep everyone we've still got (Duff going obviously) and get a proper manager in, we might well reach the promotion players. But I think it's obvious that won't happen.

Wanted to try and get a Premiership club, I think. Has probably fell back on us when nobody would take him on.
