point I'm making is that given he's a local lad he can do very well for himself staying here and all that goes with that. He could go to Everton and be calamity Taylor.

I think when your a local lad there has to be a massive reason to move on. I'm a homebird and would hate to have to uproot and move, especially for no more money.

We've played two games FFS and at current are pretty close to our full strength, certainly in attack and defence, we have a tiny squad from which players are still leaving and look like getting next to no one in to replace them

I think the team is looking good at the minute because of the motivation / passion of Smith / barton. Lose either of them to injury or suspension and let butt sneak in and we will be back to toothless wonders.

 

Some of the one touch football ( jonas aside) was excellent yesterday and will only get better as confidence grows and runs are made in anticipation of the first time pass.

 

Keep these key players in the team and things could go really well. IMO this one touch play is where smith and bartons class ooze through.

all of the midfielders on show yesterday showed they can do a job at this level. i wouldn't get carried away though thinking we're going to walk the league going on yesterday's performance. there's still time for ashley to sell a few more players, we don't know what kind of replacements we'll get - if any- and the squad is still looking thin in terms of numbers.

we need a proper pacey finisher for this campaign and we don't have one, carroll and shola will not get goals every week just from punts being put upto them, especially when we pickup a few inevitable injuries.

The championship requires hard work, fitness and willingness to fight as its 46 games and you'll know you've been in a battle, so its not easy in that sense, But some of the quality of footballers is very poor and if you have got some decent footballers and you fight for the right to play your football its not as hard as some people think.

 

When i thought it was going to be Shearer in as boss, he'd clear the shite out, bring in the right players and keep the likes of Beye and Bassong etc i was sure we'd get back up. As it is now we still have a really good chance, the problem is you can see severeal more key players being sold and suddenly it will become alot harder to get promoted, especially when our standard injury crisis hits. Then we'll find out if some of the youngsters are good enough or not, hopefully they are.

I think he had a quiet game yesterday but I'd put that down to bring out wide and Smith's card. Barton seeing Smith in a card seemed, to me, to instantly put his fire in his back pocket. If smith was clean and clear I reckon we'd have seen the tackles and snarling Joey we've come to expect.

 

Enrique was MoM for me. I know Shola got his hat trick but on overall play, Jose was a cut above the rest. Special mention to Reading though, after the first goal went in and their instant response was rebuffed they gave up the ghost. Their Captain was entirely at fault for their second. We beat a team with zero experience who had no answer to our steel in midfield and couldn't cope with our marauding fullbacks.

 

Mark my words. We'll not have it as easy in the future. Away to Sheffield will be a much trickier proposition, especially without Duff and Taylor. If Sol is coming our centre backs will be Slow and Nervy.

Whether or not Ashley sells before 31/8 or not, this season is going to be a piece of piss. I said this in earlier posts and got shot down - who's having the last laugh now eh ?

 

The CCC is very very poor with no one to match even the threadbare 16 man squad that is currently in operation.

 

 

The midfield is as solid as owt with Butt and Guthrie to cover Nolan/Barton/Smith/Spider.

 

The defence looks solid enough and the cover is there now with Simpson and even Geremi plus Kadar is ready to come in.

 

Upfront, Carroll looks the part, whilst CCC is Ameobi's level - he'll get 15-20 this season easy.

 

The club will be sold this week and changes will occur just in time so its onwards and upwards - nee bother.

48 mate and I have watched a lot of CCC games over the last 3 seasons to KNOW this division is CRAP - if the current squad can be more or less kept together, the title will be won with 6-10 games to spare.

I think the problem, accadacca, is that we don't know which side will turn out on Wednesday, let alone three months down the line. So for you to say we'll walk this league is based on nothing but gut feeling. And as we all know, guts are full of shit.

It's a weird division like. I thougt West Brow were ordinary last week and there for the taking and Reading were just garbage. Still early days like and if we lost Taylor tomorrow then we become more vunerable. I think we have a better starting 11 than many of the teams in the league, but if we start selling them (likely), don't bring any one in (very likely) and start to get injuries and suspensions (this is NUFC - very very likely) then we'll start to struggle. Personally, I havn't got a fucking clue how good this league is, so I'm just trying to enjoy the win.

This league is anything BUT a walk in the park. Its going to be a long gruelling campaign with highs and lows, but that being said i am confident we will bounce back up but it wont be easy. Just worry about hughton being able (or not) to motivate some of the lads on a cold away day to blackpool.

fair point mate, but everyone is assuming that another 5/6 players will be moving out just because the papers say so.

what makes it a tough league is the 46 league games plus a few cup games - it is demanding both physically and mentally - it is not tough because of strong teams with class players ffs !!

I would say the nightmare scenario is looking more likely every day. Add to that some no mark manager in charge, or Hughton still caretaking. I don't share the OP's wild optimism on the back of one win frankly. Doesn't matter how poor the other runners are in a race if you're hobbled.
