could be the winger to replace duff and/or jonas when they go... and he can also be the striker with pace to play alongside Shola when Carroll goes.

He's terrible out wide though.

Just about any incoming players would be good news. Including Lovenkrands. Him being on a free lends more credibility to the rumours as well. He seemed to be enjoying it while he was here.

He showed a lot more determination that a lot of our so-called 'high earners' in the second half of last season...

Appears to give a toss - players of that ilk are something of a rareity in a Newcastle United shirt these days...

And on Fulham's site...

Fulham Football Club is delighted to announce that Damien Duff becomes the Club’s third signing of the summer having put pen to paper today on a three-year deal, for an undisclosed fee, which will see the player at the Club until the summer of 2012.

The 30-year-old midfielder joins the Club from Newcastle United where he signed in July 2006.

He made his debut for Blackburn Rovers against Leicester City on the final day of the 1996-97 season at the age of just 18. Duff helped Blackburn regain promotion back to the Premier League in 2000 when the side was relegated a year earlier and he helped Rovers to League Cup victory in 2002 when the team beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in the final.

Duff went on to make 185 appearances for Blackburn and his impressive form earned him a £17m move to Chelsea in 2003 which was a club record at the time. He made his international debut for Republic of Ireland in 1998 and has made 75 appearances for his country.

Speaking from Fulham’s Motspur Park training ground, Damien Duff said:

“I am happy that my move to Fulham has been completed and look forward to joining in with the rest of the squad’s training programme immediately, in preparation for two important home matches this week. Fulham had a fantastic season last year and I know that having spoken to the manager in recent days that the Club’s ambitions remain high and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead.”

Roy Hodgson added:

“I am delighted to add a player of Damien Duff’s calibre to our squad, and welcome the further midfield options he provides us with. I have known Damien for over a decade since he broke into the first team at Blackburn when I was Manager, so I’m fully aware of his qualities and I am looking forward to working with him again. ”

Agreed - thought he was going to be part of our backbone for a promotion push

BTW - has this failure to mention transfer fee anything to do with us going through a sale? i.e. Ashley not wanting to show his hand?? Or am I just clutching at even more straws?

Not wanting to know how much he's shoved in his sky rocket / how little they've managed to get for our best players.

Looked like he cared but generally was poor over the 3 years he was here and to more or less recoup our money and get 65-70k off the wage bill makes sense for a club in our position.

Wouldn't argue with that like. I think he would have done a job but his wages were ridiculous. I bet he's gone there for less money though, so fair play again.

He took a paycut to go there according to papers over here and was reportedly on e77,000 quid per week.

The injuries took away his zip and it's no wonder Mourinho let him go for what appeared to be a low fee at the time.

I'm not sad to see him go due to the times he was out injured. We'll miss his experience and running though. We only have Jonas now in midfield capable of dribbling the ball to take pressure away from our defence.

On another note if Enrique gets injured or sold (more likely and that's saying something!), we're absolutely fucked for LB cover...

That's the wider issue. Duff is obviously one of the ones who, even if there'd been a takeover with Shearer installed as manager etc., you would have accepted needed to be moved on if possible. It's just the fact that so many others have also been sold whilst no one has come in to help bolster the squad.

agreed,

but dribbling the ball doesn’t really work that well even if you’re good at it. The quick pass and move as against Reading is our way out of this league.

we probably payed Duff a wedge to get him off our wage bill.

He did look like he cared. Good luck to him. He was past it though and any other time I would be glad to see him go but not with the squad in its current state.

Never fulfilled his promise here. I certainly never understood why we signed him, but he did seem to be the best creative force in our midfield over the last few games.

If the fee is £4m then we've down very well.

(plus his goal sent us down :icon_lol: )

We signed him because we didnt have a left winger. I thought it was excellent business at the time but he got injured very early on this toon career and never quite recovered from that.

N'Zogbia? We signed him because he was made available by a club who didn't want him rather than because he was who we needed. Far too many signings like that over the last few years.

You could be right on that one but wasnt Nzogbia just "potential" around that time? Duff was an established International winger who was playing CL football with one of the best clubs in the world. I can see how Duff *could* have been an improvement.

N'Zogbia had just had an excellent season, being one of the few bright spots under Souness and flourishing when Roeder took over and we ended up coming 7th. I may be wrong but hadn't Duff had a season at Chelsea where he struggled a bit with injuries etc. Either way, you couldn't say we didn't have a left-winger as N'Zogbia really looked the part at the time.

Duff's been little better than shite in his time here and if he had been sold last summer everyone would have been over the moon, especially if we recouped most of our money.

As Alex said though he did look like he cared (not enough to take a pay cut here though eh?)and I think he would have been happy to try and help us get promoted (and I think he would have been much better in this division) and the whole lack of number and especially attackers is frightening at the moment.
