TheMoog 0
The cold hard facts are: Ashley wants £100million for the club, £100million back that he loaned the club, and we owe £40million to the bank. You could buy all but 4 or 5 premierleague clubs for less than half of that so who in their right fucking mind is going to pay £240million for a Championship club with no manager, no decent players and a season of negative equity looming!? Its fucking crazy, hed have a job on giving the club away at the minute! Good analysis A pertinent point precisely posited I thought we were better off (in a financial sense) though It sounds about right, even without the £40m debt he still wants his £100m loan back which still means we'd cost someone £200m eventually - nobody in their right mind would take that on would they? Thing is I don't see what he's got to gain by keeping hold of us, I mean it's only going to get worse and mean we're all the more of an unattractive prospect. His best bet would be to cut his losses and near give us away because he'll never get what he wants for us, all he will get is bills for upkeep and wages until it comes to a point where he decides to close the business. Basically I think it's looking like he's just going to run us in to the ground because let's face it, why should he care if he destroys the club, it's just something he bought on a whim. Redheugh 0
http://www.footballeconomy.com/ Interesting piece VULTURES CIRCLE NEWCASTLE – 3/8/09 At a time when football fans are mourning the death of the gentleman giant Bobby Robson, it is sad to see the state of Newcastle United. Of 30 clubs relegated since the Premiership was founded in 1992-3, only 13 have rebounded straight back and some like Leeds United have fallen even lower. With their ownership unresolved, the Magpies are not well set up to face the season. Despite the fanaticism of many of their supporters, disillusionment has hit season ticket sales. Now restructuring firms are said to be hovering round the club. Sources close to owner Mike Ashley have emphatically denied that he will put the club into administration and incur a ten point penalty, even though it would bring tax advantages for his businesses. Ashley is believed to be offering loans of up to £40m for a buyer to take the club off his hands before the start of the season. It is understood that talks are being held with a Middle East consortium, but any deal is expected to fall short of Ashley's £100m asking price. Payments may be made in stages depending on how the team performs. As Ashley himself has admitted, his takeover has been catastrophic for everyone involved, not least the fans. I honestly think he's that out of touch. More thinking than I'd expect from you on a Tuesday afternoon. fwiw I reckon if we're not sold by the close of the window we won't be this season. I'd also expect an exodus at Christmas while we're languishing just below midtable.
Tom 14011
Lets hope not. Without a proper manager and some leadership it's palpable that we could go down again! I don't see why he can't give a manager the season and a modest transfer budget in order to get us back up, thus increasing his chances of making some money back. trophyshy 7083
I think Ashley wants to destroy us. He is petulant child/ruthless businessman. It was all fun and games until we turned on him (remember that bleeding heart press release after Keegangate?). Now I think he has genuine dislike for the fans that rejected him so publically and as such is doubtless enjoying toying with us. If he is going to lose loads of money anyway then he may as well enjoy his spite. I am afraid I can only see things getting worse.

That would have been the case if we hadnt had an overdraft however the £40m owing to Barclays could be recalled any time they like. Even if they dont recall it immediately, they could stop us increasing the amount. Also we dont know who else hasnt been paid, has the taxman been getting his PAYE? Anyway, I still feel that oversimplifies matters given we're a league worse off with a massive wage bill. It also seems to assume any steps the previous regime might have taken in order to correct the problem would have been as catastrophic as the ones Ashley has taken. The only step the previous regime could have taken would have been to use some of the huge piles of cash they took out of the club to pay down the debts and so get the club somewhere closer towards being able to live within its means Chances of them ever doing that? Zero.

TV money, gate receipts/ST sales / corporate entertainment etc.

It balances up with something I was told last night that someone is looking at getting in without paying anything yet. Paying him off through player sales and agreed structured payments going forwards. Just to get him out and put some structure back in the club. I'd certainly take a year of restructure. Staying in the Championship and blooding a few of the very promising kids.
