Bidders claim NUFC buyout offer ignored

ANOTHER day has passed and the circus surrounding Newcastle United is showing no signs of leaving Toon.

There are now just nine days until the start of the Championship season and the club remains managerless and no closer to being sold than it was at the start of the summer.

And today, we can reveal one of the groups interested in buying the Magpies claims it made owner Mike Ashley an offer in excess of the current asking price three months ago but was ignored.

A usually reliable source close to the consortium, which is unwilling to go public at this stage, told the Chronicle the bid did not hinge on United staying in the Premiership but was subject to due diligence.

However, the group says it did not even get close to studying the Toon’s books at the time, with Ashley not putting the club back on to the market until after relegation from the top flight was confirmed.

Despite being frustrated at Ashley’s lack of urgency, the bidders claim to remain interested and were today set for a second day of talks in London with those charged with selling the club.

It comes as reports emerged in the national media of a Dubai-based tycoon called Sirous Mahjoob making a £100m move to buy the club and bring back Kevin Keegan as manager.

A source close to Seymour Pierce confirmed there has been contact between him and managing director Derek Llambias. He said: “Derek is expected to meet him, but this is still very much in the early stages.

“Proof of funds must be the next stage. Nobody is racing ahead of themselves.

“They could be very serious, but we are yet to see proof of funds. There has definitely been dialogue between the two.”

Meanwhile, Llambias, due back in London today, again claimed a deal could be done next week.

He said: “We are dealing with several people and giving most of our time and attention to the sale.

“You must remember that some parties make offers but when it comes to putting up proof of funds they are a long way from sealing a deal. I can say we are very close to completing a deal and it could happen next week.”

Llambias has previously claimed there were at least two groups to have tabled £100m bid for the club, but the Chronicle understands those who have made offers, including a consortium involving ex-chairman Freddy Shepherd, have offered much less than that.

On Tuesday, the Singapore-based Profitable Group, fronted by ex-Liverpool star Steve McMahon, pulled out. Llambias claimed they failed to show proof of funds, an allegation refuted by McMahon.

The situation has left manager-in-waiting Alan Shearer in limbo, while fans have suffered the humiliation of losing 6-1 to League One team Leyton Orient in a much-ridiculed yellow strip.

Season ticket holder and Players Inc fanzine editor Steve Wraith said: “The rumour mill has been in overdrive all summer.

“But the reality is we have been treading water instead of trying to regroup and moving on from relegation to try and push for promotion.

“To do that we need the right man in the driving seat and Mike Ashley has made it clear he wants to sell up and get out of Newcastle United. He has told us that.

“We are also told it takes time and it is a slow process, but some of the stories that do the rounds are past ridiculous.”

He added: “The situation could get worse over time.

“People have mentioned administration and relegation to League One and it is looking like a real possibility.”

Not really for sale, never was.

There'll be another statement a few days after the season starts, when Ashley has brought in around £30m from sales.....

"No one met the valuation"

"No one met the stringent standards, we ourselves adhere to, to cherish this precious club"

"Lets all get together and get behind the 13 remaining lads and fight to bounce back"

"Fresh start"

"Really want to make it work this time"

"No, no, I realise I have said that before darling, but this time I will change, I mean it."

"What price a top ten record"

"Are you going to eat that or have you finished?"

"Of course I want mayonnaise you stupid fahkin northern monkey"
