Bomb disposal experts were called to the home of Liverpool football legend Kenny Dalglish after a live hand grenade was found on the garden wall.

The explosive was found at his house in Southport, by police investigating an "ongoing incident", unconnected to the former footballer.

Merseyside Police said: "The device was removed and made safe and is currently undergoing forensic examination."

It is not known if any of the Dalglish family were home at the time.

Mr Dalglish, who recently returned to work at Anfield with a senior role at Liverpool's Academy, is expected to return home later following the club's pre-season tour of the Far East.

Witness intimidation

The area was cordoned off while the Army's bomb disposal unit dealt with the explosive.

A Merseyside Police spokesman added: "The road remains cordoned off at its junction with Sandringham Road and high-visibility patrols have been stepped up in the area to reassure the public.

"Detectives believe this incident is linked to a series of other recent incidents in this area and not to the owner of the property where the device was found."

A member of the public called police after seeing two men acting suspiciously.

The men, aged in their 20s, were arrested a short time later on suspicion of witness intimidation.

Liverpool Football Club said it had received no information about the incident.

Nothing surprises me about that place. I phoned Skybet a few month ago to give me odds on a Merseyside based player to be burgled in the next 3 months, I was hoping for a good 4/1 maybe, bloke come back "we're not prepared to give you offers on that", basically N/O, they no they'd lose money.

See what odds you can get on a merseyside player NOT being burgled in the next 3 months, you might fancy sticking a tenner on at something like 1000-1
