hello peeps

has anyone traced their family tree, and if so whats the best (free) way to do it online???

There's a few I use. Genes Reunited (some people as Friends Reunited) is actually better than you might think. I think thats a £5 to join (you can still look around etc though). Ancestry is a great site but expensive (about £80 a year I think).

first things first

 

write down everything and everyone you know in your family and the old stories people used to tell

 

go round your old relatives, buy them drinks and start them talking and keep a note book at hand - if they are in a group they'll start each other off with the old stories "Me mam aalways said hor Gran was a transvestite " etc etc

 

You can get back 100+ years quite quickly. You need to check theis info by getting birth, deaths & marriages certificates - these will give you place of birth etc

 

The Census will cover 1841-1901 - several sources

 

Before that you are dependent on the Mormons, Parish Records and people like the Northumberland & Durham Family Historrry Society - in fact thats not a bad place to start - their website http://www.ndfhs.org.uk/info.html or drop in and see them in Bolbec Hall at the bottom of Westmoreland Road
