Wasn't Lou Macari investigated for betting against his own team in that game which was part of the reason why they got demoted in 1990 after winning the play offs v the tramps? He did indeed Gary Kelly's birthday today (aged 43) - was reading about him on NUFC.COM and the bit in bold stunned me: A diminutive but under-rated 'keeper, Kelly is the son of ex-Eire international Alan and brother to one-time Blackburn 'keeper Alan junior. He was promoted to the first team by Willie McFaul in place of Martin Thomas, having played in the FA Youth Cup winning side. Kelly made his debut in a 1-0 home victory over Wimbledon in September 1986, with the goal that night coming from his fellow former junior Paul Gascoigne - who shot past Wombles stopper Dave Beasant. Fast forward to 1988 and after keeping the number one spot for most of the previous season, Kelly found himself ousted by new signing....Dave Beasant. A loan spell at Blackpool then followed before he returned to Newcastle, only to move further down the pecking order after McFaul brought in Tommy Wright. A return to the Newcastle first team came in the closing weeks of the relegation season, but the following season saw Kelly join Bury, where he remained for seven years and played more than 250 times for the Shakers. Later spells at West Ham and Oldham followed - the latter seeing him become a crowd favourite at Boundary Park, making over 250 appearances between 1996 & 2003. A move into the Conference with Northwich Victoria came before a shock transfer to Sheffield United as goalkeeping cover. Kelly was to make one senior appearance for the Blades, in a 0-2 loss at Watford in 2003. His final club was Conference side Leigh RMI, from whom he was forced to retire on medical grounds in 2004 after failing to recover from a thumb injury. He later coached at Lancaster & Morecambe College, but in September 2007 was revealed to have undergone surgery to remove part of one of his arms in a bid to beat cancer. He had a bizarre diving technique, but he was a good shot stopper. His main weakness was he couldn't reach the halfway line often with his kicking. He had a bizarre diving technique, but he was a good shot stopper. His main weakness was he couldn't reach the halfway line often with his kicking. Agree - there was a "he's too short" reaction when he first played but I remember one of his first games was against Wimbledon and he did well against their shite - especially Fashanu.
