Park Life 71
3 out of 4 asleep in the back row.... A resonable response to the daily boredom of politics.. Is that David Trimble - 2nd row far right? Yup.
The Fish 10779
Is there not something to be said for men and women who needn't fear falling foul of the electorate making difficult decisions? Decisions that, on the face of it, would be wildly unpopular and could therefore never be floated by elected parliamentarians. Hereditary peers >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> politically appointed peers. The whole point of the Lords is to act as a legislative safeguard, not to be filled up with people you own to get your latest knee-jerk fad, open ended, draconian, piece of legislation passed (of course that is exactly what Governments think it should be). Although a proper republic would be nice too
Craig 6682
Arise Baron Sugar of Clapton Businessman Sir Alan Sugar has taken his seat in the House of Lords as Baron Sugar of Clapton. The tycoon and star of the BBC TV series The Apprentice was ennobled by Gordon Brown last month and handed the advisory post of enterprise tsar. The Tories say he cannot work for the BBC and government at the same time, saying he must choose between them. Lord Sugar, who will take the Labour whip in the Lords, says his role is to advise firms through the recession. As he was introduced to the Lords, Lord Sugar was flanked by business minister Lady Vadera and trade minister Lord Davies. He is expected to work closely with the two in his new role - a change from being flanked by sidekicks Nick Hewer and Margaret Mountford in the television series. Gordon Brown named the businessman, who sold his Amstrad business in 2007, as the government's enterprise champion last month. He will advise both business and government in the unpaid role, focusing on helping small firms get access to loans and to help them get their message across to policymakers and larger suppliers. His appointment remains controversial, with the Conservatives saying the job he is being asked to do is highly political. They argue it is incompatible with BBC guidelines on impartiality and independence. They are particularly concerned that a future series of The Apprentice could be broadcast around the time of a possible election next year. Lord Sugar said last month that the role was "politically neutral" while ministers have stressed it would not result in a conflict of interest as it was non-political. Fop 1
Arise Baron Sugar of Clapton More evidence of the Spurs media bias. His appointment shows all that is wrong with UK governance at the moment (and was probably thought up by the other major Evil threatening the UK - Mandy), it's all about PR and headlines and feck all to do with policy or knowledge. Brown will probably appoint the next Dr Who if it gets high enough ratings and it's still looking like he'll be wiped out in the next election (assuming he doesn't manage to somehow put it off till 2013). The Fish 10779
See,I don't mind Blair half as much as seem the fashion. I think we were propelled to a better place under his stewardship, sure things went badly off the rails towards the end, but all in all I think he's been one of this countries better leaders in recent times. Sure as shit better than Major, Thatcher etc. fwiw I think J. Smith would have been better still, but what's a boy to do?

Stevie could have ran the country from 1997 till 2004 without too much difficulty though. Blair's legacy will be 3 wars (one that turned from mild ethnic cleansing to flipped all out ethnic cleansing, one that everyone reckons is a disaster [even if the country does eventually come out for the better] and one where we'll be fighting for the next 25 years), and a load of things that didn't last (apart from the nannystate and love affair with spin). You see how he uses the dark side of the force. John Smith's "massive heart attack". You do have to admire him though. Totally. He's proved to be quite the comeback kid. But when you are doing the bidding of the evil empire comebacks are commonplace I should imagine. Aye he's a very, very effective operator that knows how to lie low then use his influence to claw power back, wouldn't say he was to be exactly admired ewok though, any more than Paul Gadd managing to get a job on CBBC would be. Kitman 2204
According to Icke, Mandy is a lizard. He may be right about that. I'm not so sure about his claims to be the Son of God though....I don't recall the bit in the bible where Jesus spent a hefty chunk of his life as a sports presenter
