A chorus of disapproval

Recent comments from current Newcastle players:

Sebastien Bassong: "I think in this situation, a lot of players will want to leave - they cannot stay in this situation. I'm not the only one. It would be different if a manager was in charge particularly Alan Shearer, as he knows the club and the team.

"It's a mess, Michael Owen has gone, Mark Viduka's contract is over. A lot of players are going and a lot of other players will leave the club."

"I would like to play in the Premier League with Newcastle but that's not possible. I want to leave for my career."

Habib Beye: "I'd like nothing more than to stay and help the team get back to where it belongs but there is no chance of us being promoted the way things are going.

"Training has been good and no one is slacking or taking it easy. But there is a sense that everything is just drifting.

"This cannot go on it really can't. I feel for the good of my career I have to get away because it is dragging me down.

I'm really upset by what has or rather has not been going on this summer. It was hard enough dealing with the disappointment of being relegated but things just seem to be going from bad to worse.

"I've spoken to Alan Shearer and I know how much he wanted to get Newcastle back to the Premier League. He is a top man and someone the players believe in.

"He had told us about what he expected when we returned to pre-season training and I left for my holiday fully expecting him to be in charge when I got back.

"But it hasn't happened and he doesn't seem to know what's going on much more than anyone else."

Nicky Butt: "I don't know what to say about the managerial situation. The sooner it is resolved, the better - but we have been saying that since mid-January and we are still here, so we will see.

"It's difficult for some players because they don't know where their future lies. I think that's a difficult one.

"But for pre-season, it's just a case of keeping everyone fit and injury-free, and Chris Hughton is doing a good job of that.

"The season is going to be a tough one. It's a very difficult league we are in now. Things won't be as easy as maybe some people think they will be in the Championship.

"It's going to be a massive challenge for us, but hopefully it's one that we are going to be able to match."

"I think the job needs to be (given to) someone of Alan's stature.I do feel Alan is favoured by a lot of people, and I do feel that he would do a very good job.

"It's well documented that the club needs a bit more strength in depth, but it's frustrating because time is running out to bring in players.

"It's ideal to get players in early doors so that you can bond with them, but it's frustrating when you are still waiting and almost falling behind other teams."

Jose Enrique: “My opinion is that everything seems difficult at this club. We haven’t signed any players this season so far and we don’t have a manager. Chris Hughton is a very good person, but he is not a manager. We need a manager. The things going on inside are not good - that can’t be good for the supporters either.

“It is the same as at the end of last season. Nothing has changed. The owner wants to sell the club. It would be good to see somebody come in and give us something fresh. If we start signing players soon we can go up first time, but we can’t wait much longer.

“I have a contract here, but it is difficult to play in the Championship – nobody likes to play there. It’s my fault that we are in this division and all the players should feel like that.

“If an offer came in I would have to study it. Being disillusioned makes me want to return to Spain. I have a good contract in England, but I would be resigned to losing money if I went back to Spain.”

Steve Harper: "What happened last season was desperately disappointing but just when you think there’s an opportunity for this club to put itself right, build and get straight back up, the opposite happens.

‘We want it to be resolved so we know where we are and where we’re going because at this moment the football club is dying a slow, painful death. For five or six years now it’s been a gradual, slow implosion.

‘We’ve got to soldier on but the sooner the better for everyone concerned – but most importantly for Newcastle United.

A lot of fans have come up to me and said ‘‘In two or three years, it might be a blessing that relegation happened". 'Obviously everyone is very disappointed that it happened but if something good comes out of it and the club rebuilds then maybe I can see that point.

'But at the moment the club isn't rebuilding — it’s in a state of limbo and it's no good for anyone. We just want to get this club going back in the right direction and the situation is very, very frustrating for all of us.

‘To be fair to Chris Hughton, Colin Calderwood and the lads, we have made the best of what is a dreadful situation.

'We can’t do anything about it as players but it is awful and the sooner it’s resolved, the better for everyone because we can start again.

‘All we keep hearing is “next few days, next few days, next few days”. 'Everybody – fans, players, staff – want it resolved so we can rebuild this football club because we're in an awful state at the moment.

‘Everybody is in limbo — fans, players, staff. The players don’t know what’s happening, staff don’t know what’s happening, the fans don’t.’

Kevin Nolan: "One thing that I have noticed since I come to Newcastle is that everything is public knowledge – I find it very weird.

"The fans need to know what the conclusion of this is. For them to be hearing the ins and outs of the sale of the club is driving them crazy. They'll go potty. We've got fantastic fans, so I hope they will stay as patient as they can with it.

"It's a tougher situation for everybody. Chris and Colin have come in and done a fantastic job – it's a weird situation for them.

"It's a week-to-week thing, but we hope it'll all be sorted. We want somebody to make a decision – it's unfair on the players and the staff. To be fair the players have been fantastic, and done what was needed to be done.

"We'll continue to keep our heads down. In the next week, we certainly want to know what is going to happen.

"We would prefer to know whether Mike Ashley is going to keep it next season or not or whether somebody is coming in. Then, we start getting ready for the Championship."

Steven Taylor: "We need a manager in as soon as possible. We need things sorted out. Not having a manager and having a chairman who wants to sell the club – it’s not a situation that we want to be in. Every day we pick up the papers, it’s something new. We just want something to happen as soon as possible. I’m sick of seeing our name in the ‘papers for the wrong reasons.

"The football club is like Big Brother – there’s always something going on. It never has any stability and it needs it. I’m sure the next manager will manage to do that, we just need him to take over as soon as possible. I want Alan Shearer to come back, absolutely. He’s the right man for the job.

"It’s been the worst summer of my life. I haven’t been able to relax and enjoy myself because it hasn’t really sunk in yet that Newcastle are in the Championship. Newcastle United in the Championship just doesn’t seem right. It was probably the worst day of my career when we went down but now we’ve got a job to do – we’ve got to get the club back in the Premier League.

“We’ve got some difficult games at the start of the season, we’ve got to be strong and stick together through these difficult times. At the minute we need stability, we need a manager and we need to know who the owner is going to be.

“I’m still here. I’ve got two years left on my contract and that’s all I can say. Unless Newcastle sell me, I’m a Newcastle player.”

if you believe in karma, we're due riches beyond our wildest dreams, or we've done some pretty murky things in the past. Maybe it was them bananas what hit John Barnes, or the various riots down the years, or Oz smashing up the Little Chef on the A1.

I can go days where I don't think about the situation, then think about it and think ye naa it will be ok, but now I'm starting to get a little bit depressed about it. I know it's been said by thousands of people, even Souness who hated us, but this really and truly should be one of the great clubs of the United Kingdom, but it's never been further away from being such. A truly bleak, blank, desperate near future awaits us, and the longer this goes on the smaller our fanbase becomes, to the extent that one day we may have a fanbase like Sunderland.
