Christmas Tree 4858
The wife of footballer Colin Hendry has died after her family decided to switch off her life-support machine, according to reports. Denise Hendry had been in a coma for weeks after she was given an epidural anaesthetic as part of an operation to repair botched cosmetic surgery. The operation at Salford Royal Hospital was the lastest of a series of procedures to repair the original damage. The 42-year-old's husband Colin was with his four children when the decision was made to switch off the life support machine this morning, reports the Scottish Daily Record. Jimbo 175
The wife of footballer Colin Hendry died today after her family made the heartbreaking decision to switch off her life-support machine. Denise Hendry, 42, had been in a coma for weeks after she was given an epidural anaesthetic as part of an operation to repair botched cosmetic surgery. The operation at Salford Royal Hospital was to have been the last in a long line of procedures to repair the original damage of seven years ago. Today her husband Colin gathered his four children around him when the decision was made to switch off his wife's life support machine this morning. Mrs Hendry had nearly died in 2002 after a liposuction procedure at a private hospital in Preston went badly wrong. She suffered nine punctures to her bowel and colon, causing blood poisoning and multiple organ failure and needed a 16-hour operation in May as part of the recovery process. Since Denise had undergone her latest operation to fix the damage she had only opened her eyes once as Colin and members of his family kept a vigil at her bedside. It is understood she suffered a meningitis-type infection as a result of the latest operation and was in intensive care at the hospital. This week consultants agreed with Mr Hendry that it was time the machine keeping her breathing should be turned off. He said he wanted his children to be at the hospital with their mother before she died. One of his family friends said: 'This is a man who has endured so much in the last five years.' It is believed that the former Premiership star and Scottish international will now take legal advice about his wife's treatment at Salford Royal. Swedish cosmetic surgeon Gustav Aniansson carried out the liposuction at the private Broughton Park Hospital, in Preston, Lancashire, in April 2002. Speaking about Denise's ordeal which started after the liposuction surgery at Preston by Dr Gustav Aniannson, Colin said: 'We are having to live with the awful consequences of what that man did.' The Hendry's eldest daughter Rheagan is persuing a career in entertainment and modelling while her brother Kyle, 18, is on the books of one of his father's old clubs , Blackburn Rovers. Calum is ten and Niamh is nine. Rheagan said: 'It has always been a great shame that my youngest brother and sister don't remember mum from before her illness.' 'She was not some sort of TV footballers' wife. She was all for the family.' Hendry spoke about his wife's health in May, saying: "Denise has shown some signs of improvement over the last few days. 'She's a real fighter and I believe that, if anyone can come through an ordeal like this, it's Denise. 'I spend every day at her bedside and it's encouraging to see the progress she is making, although there is still a long way to go.' In 2006 Mrs Hendry was awarded £300,000 in compensation - the largest cosmetic surgery payout in history - from the 'reckless' doctor, Gustaf Aniansson, who carried out the operation. The NHS doctors who saved her reported Dr Aniansson to the General Medical Council, describing him as 'reckless and incompetent'. Hendry added: 'It's easy to look back now and say how we wish she hadn't gone to Aniansson, but she did and we're having to live with the awful consequences of that man's negligence. 'The operation he undertook went dreadfully wrong and Denise nearly died.' Further corrective surgery at Preston Royal Infirmary was not successful and his wife had to have further treatment at Salford Royal. The family's lawyer, Stephen Jones, an expert in clinical negligence cases with Manchester law firm Pannone, said: 'I was obviously most concerned when Colin told me of Denise's ongoing problems. 'She has been through an awful lot over the years as a direct result of Mr Aniansson's negligent surgery back in 2002 and has had to undergo numerous remedial operations since. Denise and Colin Hendry in hospital after she recovered from the initial botched surgery in 2002 'Her admission to Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust was due to problems from one of those operations.' Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith said today: 'This is devastating news for Colin and his family. 'The thoughts of everyone at the Scottish FA and, I am sure, everyone associated with the game here in Scotland are with them at this tragic time.' snakehips 0
I know we are all a bit bad on here with poor jokes at times, but I have to confess this story has made me quite sad. I remember her problems following her surgery years ago, but thought she had made a reasonable recovery. To read this latest bad news came as a real shock to me. I'm not one for posting these RIP messages, but in this instance I can't help feel sorry for the woman, husband and children. Vanity or not, it is a sorry tale. RIP. NJS 4411
I've read a few things about it sort of "serving her right" as it was only cosmetic surgery which I think is harsh - unfortunately stuff like this happens in hospitals no matter what you're in for - by definition they are dangerous places. I thought this death was a shame no matter what. One thing that struck me on a personal note is how "easy" it is to be able to switch off life support compared with not being able to cross the line from a DNR decision for someone who only has a few (distressing) days left in "helping" them as happened with my Mam - I think this illustrates that its a grey area which could be improved. Billy Castell 0
Sad to hear, as he will always be my favourite ex-Rovers player, even including our mutual friend. I just hope the surgeon gets banned across the world, as such incompetence cannot be excused.
