Out of interest, who here actually regularly sees stand up live? I don't think it's a format that really transfers at all well on the telly, and wouldn't want to judge someone unless I'd seen them in the flesh. Also, I've been disappointed by some of the better TV performers in real life, and pleasently surprised by some who didn't come off well on the telly.

I'd love to see Fish perform live btw, I have to say.

I don't do stand-up myself.

I see stand up pretty regularly as you'd guess, never really bother with the huge stars like Noble or Izzard. You can get a better night watching their preview stuff upstairs in a pub than you can at a huge theatre. A lot of very very funny people will never make it on tv because they're just not the right fit. Al Pitcher for one.

Most towns have average size (100-150 cap) gigs for around a tenner, the beer is normally reasonably priced. You're pretty much guraranteed a good night, even if the comics themselves don't float your boat. Just don't go in a massive group.

I don't believe stand up really works on tv, you can have funny people being funny like MTW, or you can have funny clever people being clever and funny as on QI. But to get the ... feel of a stand-up you absolutely have to be there. Similarily a lot of comedians who've ... sorry my mate just sent me this text "Be honest now, when you saw Michael Jackson's brother pushing his coffin, did it remind you of Cool Runnings?"

anyway, a lot of comedians who've ticked a box have made it on stage despite not being that funny in real life.

It's a great tv show, hopefully Boyle will have written some new stuff as he is the real star of the show. Also I hope theys top feeling the need to tick the minority boxes. Gine Yashere was not, is not and never will be funny.
Agreed. She's only on because she ticks the female, ethnic minority and plus-sized boxes in one hit.

I do. I've seen loads over the years. I'd also agree that sometimes someone who you don't think is top class on tv can be very good on stage.

I saw Parsons live in Nottingham and thought he was fantastic. Really funny bloke and very quick wit. I don't think the likes of Howard are terribly funny, they just shout loudly at whatever random thought pops into their head.

I'd like to see Jo Brand live too, I like her humour and think the way she carries herself is great. I used to hate her, but she grew on me over time. She was funny as when she did HIGNFY.

Not seen any of them live but I like Parsons as well - very clever humour I think. Most of my friends who like Mock The Week say they like Boyle, Howard and Dennis and then say "that bald guy is really annoying though". He has a slightly annoying voice but he's certainly funnier than Howard in my view - he has his moments but he's normally just being an idiot.

I saw Parsons doing a topical stand-up show in London and thought he was outshone by most of his lesser known colleagues, then again if it wasn't for MTW I wouldn't know who Parsons was.

Parsons=Torquay United fan...his only saving grace imo. Cant stand him!

Someone mentioned Dylan, I'm a huge fan. I wish he'd put in an appearance on one of those shows. I like Alan Davies too and although I enjoy Qi I think he could do so much more, or has he toured recently?

I have seen hundreds of stand up I would guess probably more than any other poster.

I've seen quite a few stand-ups really. Didn't enjoy last nights Mock the Week, but out of all the people on there I have never seen any of them live (bar Russel Howard on Live @ the Apollo, but I don't think he is particularly funny anyway).

One of my favourite stand up comedians to see live is actually Simon Amstell, who I saw around the start of his Buzzcock days (might have even been before it).

Dylan Moran is meant to be a decent stand up, and is supposedly quite similar to his Black Books character in real life. I think he is living in Edinburgh now, which is where my sister sees him around and about quite a lot.

I am watching McIntyres comedy roadshow and Al Murray is on I have never liked him and he is proving me right.

The pub lanlord bit gets on my wick, he just isn't funny

it probably doesn't help that all that "british" gags he does is hardly going do well with most people outside of England.

Also when you take into consideration he is a public school cunt he is just taking the piss out of the working classes I really hate the fucker.

That's the point of his act though, isn't it? Slight problem I also have is his not being funny.

He's mocking stereotypes and the like. He's not taking the piss out of the working class or foreigners, he's taking the piss out of ignorance.

Yeah, whether you think he's funny or not is one thing, but its never been about taking the piss out of the working class, its always been having a go at bigots, whilst at the same time light heartedly poking fun at foreigners.

fwiw I don't think he's that funny, it should have been a repeat character in a sketch show that lasted one season, however he's making a career out of it and that is lazy.
