Papa Lazaru 0
Returns tonight on BBC 2 at 9pm. Boyle is too good. About time it was back, i suspect its because of the individual success of most of the regulars with their stand up etc. that its taken ages to get them all available again. The Fish 11080
It's a great tv show, hopefully Boyle will have written some new stuff as he is the real star of the show. Also I hope theys top feeling the need to tick the minority boxes. Gine Yashere was not, is not and never will be funny.

Guess who is on tonight's episode. I'll put every penny in my pocket against every penny in yours that she mentions something about "at her age if you don't have x no. of kids you're expected to be a lesbian" and something about being of Nigerian descent. she's an unfunny hack with a chip on her shoulder about being a black woman comedian. Reckons she doesn't get as many gigs as white men because of it. Which is bollocks, she doesn't get as many gigs because she's shit, has a limited repetoire, has a massive chip on her shoulder and she's shit. she's just shit. Its a given that at some point she'll either shout a punchline or shout and do a nigerian accent! Over the course of a show she will come up with 1 or 2 funny lines in amidst the unfunny crap, but to be honest i'd expect most of us to manage that given a chance and having seen alot of the questions that will appear in advance! Papa Lazaru 0
I've just Googled that women, didn't know her name but yes her and jo brand should both find a hole to jump down.<insert Jo gag> i've got one of those already! </jo gag> Omid Djalili who does all the Iranian gags is hilarious Stephen K amos who does the African ones also good She should take note What ive seen of Omid's stand up is funny enough, though its one routine, i don't know what his whole range is like, what i saw of his sketch show wasn't good. And Amos is pretty average and when i've seen him on shows like Have i got news for you etc. falls back all the time on the black man being arrested for driving a nice car style of joke. And to be fair to Jo Brand, her standup is obvious and mostly about being fat, but theres a reason why she has appeared regularly on all of the comedy panel shows from mock the week, HIGNFY, QI, Buzzcocks et al because away from her stand up she is quite good and can mix it with the blokes on these shows where most women get burried from the start. The Fish 11080
The thing that bugs me is that there are funny women out there, Sarah Kendall, Sarah Millican, I personally like Lucy Porter (cracking norks), Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey. Off the top of my head. Now MTW probably couldn't get the latter two to come across, but the first three are so much more entertaining than Gina fucking Yashere and Jo Bastard brand. I'd prefer to see Lauren Laverne and Claudia Winkleman who aren't even stand-ups!

Don't know about brand being on those shows and being funny though, always considered her fairly dire in honesty, but for the likes of hignfy and qi she isn't totally thick and can keep in with the likes of bill bailey and co with actual answers on topic. Favourite comedians remain to be eddie izzard and dylan moran though (got tickets for eddie in decemeber =D) Yeah its hard to tell really until you've seen a few of a comedians routines, see if they can keep up the standard or if they have 1 good set which they always fall back on. I like Dylan Moran, also remember the first time i saw him doing stand up on TV, way back at the start of his career and i had no idea whether he was pissed, pretening to be pissed or a bit of both! I tend to like the ones who are good standups and who write and deliver good material, but who are also quick and great off the cuff on these types of shows as well. Somebody like Sean Lock i haven't actually seen much of his standup, his live at the Apollo one was only ok, but on these panel shows he is about the best of all of them, just comes out with some fantastic stuff. Agree about there being funny ones out there, but i often find like you that they're better off with funny women like Laverne who don't try doing joke/punchline they are just pretty funny in themselves. And Claudia Winkleman is always entertaining!
The Fish 11080
Howard, Boyle, Parsons and Dennis work well together, but Dennis if often outshone by the guests. David Mitchell for start. You can see that Boyle and Howard are the best suited to this shows format. Boyle's stand up has suffered though, most of his stuff you'll already have seen on the show. Because Howard is a little more whimsical he gets away with it a little more away from MTW. Herring, Brigstocke, Lock and Amstel would be perfect guests imo

It's joked that she single handedly made the woman a total laughing stock and sunk the republican bid.
Renton 22460
Frank Skinner is a guest tonight. Excellent. Bought tickets to see him at the Edinburgh festival in August, he was class there a couple of years back. For anyone that's interested in stand up, the Edinburgh fringe has to be the best place in the world to see it, and the main reason I go every year. Acid 0
Howard is mediocre tbh, he just seems like a hyper kid who's ate too many cola bottles, blurting out random lines.

Herring, Brigstocke, Lock and Amstel would be perfect guests imo I do think they should widen their net a little and those names you mentioned would be on my list, well the first 3 anyway, Amstel in recent series of Buzzcocks has massively declined, just spending a whole episode berrating some ludicrously easy target (like Anthony from Blue) with the same obvious joke over and over, instead of being the sharp and quick witted guy who took over from Lamarr. I'd like to see Stephen Fry try it as well, we're used to him on QI but the episode of Buzzcocks he did as a guest worked well, but then he can do everything can't he! I remember at the time reading about her doing Palin, long before i'd seen the fantastic 30 Rock, and i think her getting a bit of fame from that has helped 30 Rock's viewing figures a little which sadly aren't what they deserve to be and probably helped get them to comission the 3rd and 4th series. Renton 22460
Out of interest, who here actually regularly sees stand up live? I don't think it's a format that really transfers at all well on the telly, and wouldn't want to judge someone unless I'd seen them in the flesh. Also, I've been disappointed by some of the better TV performers in real life, and pleasently surprised by some who didn't come off well on the telly. I'd love to see Fish perform live btw, I have to say.

Apart from missing some off the cuff material the person does at that particular gig, especially if they're a Ross Noble type who a large part of the act is down to the night, i don't miss the not being there in the flesh side of things, so have always loved watching good standup on TV. I can imagine how others on here will feel its much better to be there though.

Hmmm, can't think of another format that benefits more from the audience atmosphere personally, apart from maybe live music. Also as you hinted at the interaction for me is absolutely vital. For a really good comedian you should feel slightly nervous sitting in a conspicuous seat.

I've never been attracted to live music, don't even go to see bands i love so as you can tell live interaction does nothing for me! And when i do go to stand up gigs there is no chance at all i will be sitting near the front for the comic to have a go! One of my mates went to see Jerry Sadowitz and was quite near the front and spet the whole gig shitting himself at what might happen, that's not my idea of fun. Better to be nearer the middle and see somebody else being picked on!
